loaded xp onto a dell with me. laptop has a 15 inch
monitor and now the screen shows about a 13 inch screen
with a order 1 1/2 inch black border around the outsid.
what did I sdo wrong?

Does the screen have its own adjustments? Check your Dell documentation. I
don't use a laptop but most PC monitors have manual adjustments for such
issues.

You didn't do anything wrong, the graphics drivers function differently in
each operating system. It's likely XP installed XP compatible drivers and
your screen needs to be adjusted to compensate.

Download the video driver from your video manufacturer.
XP's drivers are not too impressive in some instances.

Just alter your display resolution to a larger size (smaller numbers)
Right click on the desktop select properties
then select settings.
Worked for me.
Now if someone could help me with my RAM problem!
