You didn't do anything wrong, the graphics drivers function differently in
each operating system. It's likely XP installed XP compatible drivers and
your screen needs to be adjusted to compensate.

With Fn-F7 (the Key is called "Font" - don't ask me why) you can
switch between pixel-by-pixel display and interpolation to the whole
display for low resolution screens on Dell-Laptops.
