Has anyone used ResHack to successfully change 'start' to something else (on the start button)? I've tried, but whenever I try to modify Windows/explorer.exe, my changes are never saved, even when I've stopped the explorer.exe process used the 3-finger salute.

That's a good point, but in my case I've long patched uxtheme to use non-signed themes.

You need to get rid of the digital signature check in uxtheme.dll before XP will recognized a third party or hached theme.  See if the folks at http://www.tgtsoft.com have updated there routine to work with XP.  They used to have a free program that would do this for you.
