How do I put icons onto the toolbar? I did it on one laptop but cannot
seem to do it on another.

What "Toolbar" in Windows XP are you referring to?

Internet Explorer?, ... Windows Explorer?,... Notepad?,... ...or, perhaps
you mean the "Taskbar" at the very bottom of the Windows XP desktop?,...

The latter is called the Quick Launch ToolBar, and is [re] activated by
"right-clicking" on an *empty* area of the taskbar at the base of your
desktop, and choosing :

"Toolbars" > "Quick Launch"

hope this is of some help...

Did you unlock the Windows taskbar so you could modify it?

Into which part of the tool bar? The Quick Launch area? The Service
Tray?

I've just turned this off and on by following your instructions, and -
thanks very much, though I know you didn't intend it! - it has now
shrunk. I can see six icons (two rows of three, since I have a
double-height toolbar), with next to it a button with ">>" on it, which
when clicked, pops up - temporarily the others. How do I get it back (to
where all my quick launch icons are permanently visible, with less space
for task buttons) (-:? I've tried dragging that ">>" button.

Assuming the OP _did_ mean the QL area, he maybe meant how you actually
get further icons into it ...

No, I haven't changed my mind - I'm perfectly happy with the one I have, thank
you.

OK, I'll try to explain this the best I can. I am trying to set up
laptop for my daughter the same way that I have my laptop setup. I
don't remember how I set mine up. I have managed to create a new quick
launch on the bottom but it has an extra row that I cannot get rid of.
So I guess my question is how do I get rid of the extra row and still
keep my row of quick launch icons?

Reduce the height of the Windows taskbar. Unlock it, position the mouse
cursor on the top edge (so it become a double up/down arrow), and drag
down to reduce height (which reduces the row count). Then lock the
Windows taskbar again.

Your reply asks for something completely different than your original
request. First you wanted to put icons in a toolbar (QuickLaunch
toolbar in the Windows taskbar?). Now you're asking how to alter the
height (number of rows) in the Windows taskbar. Not the same thing.

Ok, I finally got it! I don't know exactly how I did it but it's the
way I want it now. Thanks for all your help.
