vanishing up/down bar

When reading my mail after I have read several messages the up/down (scroll)
bar disappears. I have my setting on Preview Pane not clicked as I like to
read the sender/topic without having the actual message open. That way I can
delete advertizing etc without opening them. I use the delete key on my
toolbar. I find that as well as vanishing the scrolling bar (up/down) bar
lenghtens continually. Any suggestions?
