I've reformatted my XP Home and am reinstalling. Now I'm trying to
apply SP1 from the M$ CD. I get a error message message "atapi.sys is
open or in use" -- SP1 won't install.

I booted into safe mode and tried again. Same thing.

I checked for the offending file -- I see it in FOUR places?
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ReinstallBackups\0006\DriverFiles\i386
C:\WINDOWS\system32\driver.cab

QUESTION:
What is the "ReinstallBakcups\0006" folder?
How do I get SP1 to install?

Thank you for your help.

This message can be caused by third-party Virtual CD software such as Daemon
Tools or Alcohol: please uninstall all such third-party products before
attempting a Service Pack upgrade.

XP SP2 has been available for nearly 2 years. Now that SP2 is available, it
is not necessary to apply SP1, as SP2 is cumulative and contains all the
fixes and improvements in SP1. Furthermore, SP2 incorporates very
significant improvements to XP security, that are not available with SP1
plus updates.

SP1 will no longer be supported after 10 Oct 2006.
