Hi all ..
i need help
i got this messeage when am trying update the windows defender ...
"windows defender was unable to complete the update :
0x80240022. the wrong diskette is in the drive. Insert %2 (Volume Serial
Number : %3) into drive %1. "

Glad I'm not the only one. I've been getting the same thing. It's also been
trying to update automatically for several days and failed. If you try via
Windows Update, critical updates then it downloads but also fails to install.
It says the problem occurs after you uninstall and try to reinstall Windows
Defender, but I have never done either, and I upgraded from Microsoft
Antispyware, so have been using it for a year. There is definately a bug at
microsoft's end.

If you're not a paid BETA tester and you value your machine DON'T
download, install and run BETA software!

Try this workaround:
1. Remove the current signature file. To do this, click Start, click Run, type
Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}
and then click OK.
2. Open Windows Defender. To do this, click Start, click Programs,
and then click Windows Defender.
3. Check for new definitions. To do this, click the Help options arrow next
to the Windows Defender Help icon, click About Windows Defender, and
then click Check for Updates.

I tried this and it failed. The message received was:

The solution that worked for me was uninstall Windows Defender, download the
latest version, install and update. It just seems that the latest update is
somehow not compatible with the old version of Windows Defender.

I uninstalled Windows defender completely and then re-installed it. When the
program went out to get all of the updates, it worked.

Most Beta software I see is install at your own risk, free and without being

This is similar to what I usually tell those asking about Beta:
There is little or no support for beta of any kind.
Install Beta only if you are willing to accept data loss and format the
drive to resolve any issues related to a Beta.
If you are not prepared for possible data loss and formatting, you are not
prepared for Beta of any kind.

I was having trouble installing the updates for Windows Defender. I tryed

I tried Ms. Frisch's suggestion and it did not work. I even tried to

Had the same problem and finally discovered that on the corporate WSUS
Server, Windows defender updates are not approved for detection and
installation.

Workaround without changing the WSUS configuration: Open IE, then Windows
Update. IE Windows Update detects the defender definitions. Downloaded and
installed them from Windows Update without any problem.

I have installed a new hard drive and reinstalled all my software from a
backup which included Windows Defender beta 1, which had expired. I removed
this and downloaded the latest version and now I have the "windows defender
tried all the workarounds given here and none work. I have Windows 2000 and
all patches to date, Norton Anti-virus (also up to date) and the latest
ZoneAlarm firewall. Any suggestions?

this and downloaded the latest version and now I have the "windows defender
was unable to complete the update : 0x80240022. the wrong diskette is in the
drive. Insert %2 (Volume Serial Number : %3) into drive %1" message. I have tried all the workarounds given here and none work. I have Windows 2000 and
all patches to date, Norton Anti-virus (also up to date) and the latest
ZoneAlarm firewall. Any suggestions?

I'm running W2k Pro SP4.
I had to uninstall Windows defender, delete any reference to it in Windows
Explorer (folders, files, MpSigstub.log). Search and delete every reference
to Windows Defender in the registry. (Except if it had to do with Legacy).

run Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}
Reboot.
Download the latest WindowsDefender.msi. Install. Then open the app, click
on the list arrow next to the question mark, click on About Windows Defender,
check for updates.
Quite a pain, but nothing else worked.

install the latest Updated definitions to no avail and tried to register the
wups2.dll file (KB943144).. Also attempted to remove and Re-install Windows
Defender from MS. this did not work either Anxiously awaiting a MS
resolution..

None of these solutions work for me, but just before giving up, I found
this solution and it worked great.
