Re: Updates KN973687 and KN976098

Running: Windows XP Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

I click the Update icon on my taskbar and the download appears to start but
then I get a message saying they failed to install. No error number.
I tried to get them from the Update website but that page just seems to hang
up. Or maybe I am too impatient, but I wait 5 minutes and it is still
searching.

Those Updates should be KB---sorry.

Try another attempt at updating by clicking the Windows Update shortcut
on the Start Menu, please. When/if it fails, close Internet Explorer.
Open the WindowsUpdate.log and scroll all the way to the bottom.
Please copy and paste the **last** 50 or so lines into your reply:

Nothing happens when I try the Shortcut in the start menu. No page checking
for updates comes up. The update icon keeps returning to my taskbar and I do
try to install it but always with a failure.

When trying to run windowsupdate.log I get a message saying

"Windows cannot open this file" , then directing me to a site to look up a
program to open it.

There it says

"Windows has the following information about this file type. This page will
help you find software needed to open your file.

File Type: Unknown

Description: Windows does not recognize this file type.

You may search the following Web site for related software and information:

Search the web "

I'm starting to think something is messed up....

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

Microsoft PCSafety provides home users (only) with no-charge support in
dealing with malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted
software), and adware.
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&prid=7552&st=1

Also available via...

Consumer Security Support home page
https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/

Otherwise...

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

2b. Vista or Win7=> Run this scan instead:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm

3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cleanup,

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

The WindowsUpdate.log opens with Notepad.
Please follow the advice in PABear's post to ensure that malware has not
taken control of your computer.

Just an FYI

I have tried posting at the site
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&prid=7552&st=1 that PAB
directed me to but for two days I keep getting this message

Error:
Our system is not responding right now. We apologize for the
inconvenience. Our technical team has been alerted and is working on
resolving the problem.

To get support, use one of the following options:

The WindowsUpdate.log shows no errors. It's showing that the updates are
pending to install at 5:00 PM today, your local time.

Did you do *any* of the steps that PABear recommended or did you just
try to contact MS ?

I installed, ran CCleaner, rebooted hoping that would fix the problem, but I
still had no luck. Today I tried again and the updates downloaded fine.

So the issue is fixed- thanks for your time in try to help me resolve this.

Just an FYI for Mow--- the log message about the scheduled to install the
next day showed up for every day that I tried to install it.

You're mowst welcome. Glad to hear that the updates finally installed.
If this were my system the next step would be to run Malwarebytes
Anti-malware to ensure there are no "bad" files present (eg. malware):
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Have it remove anything detected.
Next, configure the installed antivirus/security suite to not scan nor
realtime monitor the locations shown in this MSKB:

Virus scanning recommendations for computers that are running Windows
Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000,
Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822158

Then run this MS Fixit: How do I reset Windows Update components?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Run the Fixit in it's Aggressive mode and then restart the system.
It will do all of the steps in the " Let me fix it myself " section.
The system must be connected to the internet so that all steps can be done.

You should be good to go after that.
