When I get an attachment in Outlook Express, many times I
only see a box with a red "x" in the upper left corner.
Can anyone tell me what is wrong?

Are you seeing a message that says "OE has blocked access...." ? If so, see
http://www.omegageek.com/OESecurity.htm

I suggest you post in an Outlook Express group, as this is not a Windows or
Windows Update issue.

microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress for OE 5.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlookexpress for OE 5.5x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress for OE 6.x
microsoft.public.internet.outlookexpress.mac for OE for Macintosh

If those groups aren't carried on the news server that's carrying this group
try using msnews.microsoft.com (MS's public news server that's the source
for all the microsoft.public newsgroups).

A good website for information on OE is:
http://www.tomsterdam.com/

Go to Tools, Options, Security tab and uncheck "Do not allow attachments to
be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus".

In Outlook go to Tools, Options, Other tab, General area, check "Make
Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar".

Suddenly my machine beganreceiving my e-mail through Outlook Express 6.0.
Now virtually (but not all) all the attachments that are sent to me are
blocked. I had archived some of the prior e-mails received in Outlook, some
that had attachments. I tried to open some of them and I couldn't open any
of the archived attachments...these were attachments that I had successfully
received, and opened, when my e-mail came in under Outlook.
