Problem Description: I am a home user. not on a network.
I have a primary boot drive and a backup drive. the computer was working
great.
on 10/10 i downloaded and installed the 8 priority updates to include one
for sql server service pack.
when I rebooted the computer as prompted, chkdsk suddenly initialized.. to
check the consistency of the backup data drive.. but stopped due to an
error.. the bios, my computer and device manager all recognize the drive D.
However, the volume label and NTFS file system is not recognized now except
by chkdsk. I receive various messages such as the drive is not accessible,
there is an I/O device error, Im asked if I want to format the drive, but it
wont format. Went i went into disk management the drive now does not even
show though "drive D" does show as mentioned above. The other issue is that
now add or remove programs does not display programs. Both of these issues
occurred after I updated using microsoft update. Im really stumped. I have
many gigs of sensitve info on the affected disk. Syatem restore did not
correct the problem.. changing sata connectors and trying another sata socket
on the MB did not help.
addendum: I disconnected drive D and now add or remove programs works. I
uninstalled and reinstalled the updates and now there are no problems execpt
my WD backup drive is useless. maybe theres a problem with the drive, but as
I said nothing was wrong until i rebooted the machine after the updates. Id
love to get the backup drive working again. But chkdsk and WD disk utilities
cannot help.
