Has anyone actually downloaded SP1 via Windows Update?

I am told I am update. I uninstalled the SP1 RC and assume I will receive
the SP1 at a later date.

Actually, it is much better to use Windows Update to obtain SP1.
1) Windows Update will scan and offer any updated drivers that are
recommended prior to installing the SP. It is safer/better for most people
to use Windows Update.
2) The update is typically 65 MB or a little bit more, whereas the full
download link is much larger (434 MB). Windows Update downloads a special
compressed format, but it builds up a FULL copy on your hard disk just
exactly like the standalone download before beginning the install process.
So in effect, the actual SP install works the same.

I tried both methods of installing SP1 and the Windows Update

Yes, hard decision but again personal choice. One would think if you were offered SP1,
then it would be safe to install the same and that your drivers were okay etc.
Agreed WU for most would be the safest, easiest (we hope) and more regulated. The only
problem is that not everyone can download the 65 meg - slow connection, limited or
whatever.

I have decided on my course of action and will attempt over the weekend.
I have a plan 'A' disaster plan - Plan 'B' is to unpack an old P4 system
with WIN 2000 NT on it and give it to her :-)

Update -
It was noted that SP1 was not on offer via yellow shield or WU Home after
system scan.
Having applied all safety nets, disconnected from net - disabled ALL
security progs running - cleaned TIF, all temp folders, defrag etc inserted
disc with all current updates on offer - installed - reboot after each one -
no problems.
Later in the day, did another system scan via WU Home - nothing offered.
Decided NOT to install SP1[KB936330] that I downloaded to disc.
So it would appear that my daughter's system has one of the 8 or so causes
for not being offered SPI as per KB948343

I have eliminated the possible reasons to the following
Cause 5
A hardware device driver or device software was problematic when you updated
to Windows Vista SP1.
Cause 8
You see one or more updates for Windows Vista when you run Windows Update.
However, you do not see Windows Vista SP1 listed.
Not too sure re Cause 3 - needs looking into further
Cause 4 - Have not tried to install SP1 despite not being offered it.
Cause 5 seems the best bet - she has Sigma stuff - got to check the others
mentioned.
Cause 8 seems to be the position at the moment - all other updates offered
are installed as is required and nothing else has been offered since.
What a nightmare - I think I will wait for this other stand alone, which I
believe will be the short version for single computers and offered via Auto
update - that may come out in April.
Thanks for your help - I don't remember XP SP1 being this much trouble.
