It has been 3 or 4 weeks now and I am not able to install windows updates.
Right now it says I have 2 updates to install but just hangs there. The green
bar goes across but never installs the updates. What do you think?

I was getting an erorr code a couple of weeks ago. I didn't write it down. I
no longer get an erorr code it just hangs. I was hoping it would since I had
some time to try and figure this out tonight.

Open Windows Update and review your history.
Locate the update/s that have failed to install (you can view further
information about the failed update/s by double-clicking the update )

Also note that you can start a free Windows Update support incident request:

This morning I tried the updates again and they installed. as soon as it was
done a ballon poped up saying windows can't check for updates. I clicked on
windows updates again and now get erorr code 80073712. This is the same code
I was getting before.

The "Windows Features" dialog box is empty in Windows Vista, or you receive
an error message that includes the following code when you try to use
Windows Update: "0x80073712":

It goes thru the process of searching for updates and then says Windows can’t
search updates and gives the error code code80073712. This seemed to happen
after reading about the stealth windows updates.

I understand. See TauArian's reply and see the links I posted in my first
reply.
