Update for Windows XP (KB896344) - Error Code: 0x8007F0EA

Trying to downlaod this file from Microsoft download site a couple of times
and get the same error. Have looked the error code up on the Knowledge Base,
but nothing showed up. Anybody got anything...

This means nothing to me so I would rely on the context of the error
within the log. What is that context?

Also you have not disclosed your OS.
That is always important, probably even more so with this update

I come here to seek assistance, not get a lecture, OK...

I am trying to download an Update for a 32-Bit Windows XP Pro machine that
will allow files transfer to a 64-Bit XP machine, according to the KB
Article. The update refuses to install. THAT'S MY PROBLEM!!!!

I want to know if other people have encountered the same problem and if so,
what did they do to correct it; so that I can install the update on my
machine.

First of all: pls. be a little polite to anyone trying to give you the
assistance you want! Robert's comments ARE valid: there is a download for the
wizard (try search for 896344) and if you install that, you'll find that
probably KB890046 (xpsp3res.dll) was not valid.

This is the solution that worked for me. I used information posted in 2
different topics for this problem.

This was one - But I had to change a couple things. I listed step-by-step
instructions below.

"All you need to do is go into your windows\system32 folder and find the file
xpsp3res.dll file and add a .bak at the end of it. Now try running windows
update and it should update fine and add a new xpsp3res.dll file to your
windows\system32 folder."

Follow this exactly and it should get you up and going. - Execute this in
order.
1.) do as listed above - Go to the windows\system32 folder and find the file
xpsp3res.dll file and add a .bak at the end of it. (don't re-run anything yet)
2.) Go to Control Panel, Add\Remove programs and click on "Show Updates"
3.) Uninstall KB896344
4.) Restart the computer
5.) Go to Contol Panel and run "Windows Update"
6.) Two items to load will show up. KB896344 again and KB890046
7.) Only Select KB896344 and install it - It worked for me.
8.) Restart the computer again
9.) Go to Contol Panel and run "Windows Update" again
10.) Now let it install KB890046 (This adds back in the xpsp3res.dll file)
11.) Restart the computer again.

Now you should have both installed and everything working AOK. That is what
it took for me to get things going. Hope it helps you out.

So, in summary, it would seem the "xpsp3res.dll file" is what causes
KB896344 to not load correctly. Good luck!!

found it so fast, Anyways, I have a newbie question for you.......when you
typed the following

Is the file now going to read xpsp3res.bak? Sorry for the dumb question.

Gosh CB, was that really all there was to fixing this problem (what about the
long instructions & many many steps that tta1989 wrote up & the 32/64 bit XP
comments Robert Aldwinckle made here?

BTW...
I just got the exact same problem (error code: 0x8007F0EA) but for
two updates [Network Diagnostic Tool (KB914440) & Update for
Windows XP (KB896344)]. I also can't figure out how to do as MS's
instructions say ("Try to install it again, or request help..."). I can't
figure out how to move both from the "Review your update history section"
where they show as having failed, and back to where you can reselect them so
as to try installing them once again (there must be some kind of trick here
that I have not figured out yet. Otherwise, why would MS instruct us to try
to install an update agian without providing a method of doing so!).

Has anyone figured out how MS expects us to do what they are telling us to
do (surely MS doesn't expect all of its users to all be propeller heads!)?

And, does this same thing work for the other update (KB914440) and if so
what file does one add the .bak to?

One can deal frequently the same error code referring to different KBs. I
came to this place following the error code 0x8007F0EA, but not same KB with
yours; mine is KB951978. Which I discovered was caused by SCCRUN.DLL. Weird
isn't it?
