I believe I've tried every posted solution to this problem, but to no avail.
I receive error 0x80072EFD every time I try to perform a Windows update. I'm
using Windows 2000 Professional SP 4, and I have no software firewall at all
(only the firewall on my router). All the Windows update sites are already in
the trusted zones list, and I've run the BITS update (although I'm not sure
how to check if it worked). What's really confusing is that my laptop
(running Windows XP Home SP 1) can get updates just fine behind the same
router. Any assistance would be appreciated.

ZeroG,

Since the XP system updates, one would assume that the issue is not with
the firewall.
Have you tried this ? : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

> 0x80072EFD - ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT The connection with the server has
> been terminated.
> ... Windows Update error code seen during the download of updates or accessing
> the Windows Update site, and is generally related to third
> party firewall applications blocking SVCHOST (Generic Host Process for Win32)
> communication and/or a proxy server blocking the communication.
> Modify the rules on the firewall to allow SVCHOST to pass.

Are IE's settings the same on both systems ? Suggest you check via
Internet Options in the Control Panel and compare the settings of sites
in the Trusted zones by clicking the Custom Level button.

Yeah, I saw that article referenced here before. As I said, I have no
third-party firewall software running on my Windows 2000 machine. As far as
the IE settings go, the XP machine actually has no sites listed in the
"trusted sites" section, but the problem machine (2000) has tbe following
relevant entries:

http://*.update.microsoft.com
https://*.update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://download.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://update.microsoft.com
https:/update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com

And "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" is not
selected.

Open Internet Options in the Control Panel. Click the Connections tab.
Click the LAN Settings button.
Make sure that *no* options are checked.
Close LAN Settings, now click the Advanced tab

Under Browsing, ensure that " Enable page transitions " is checked.
Under HTTP1.1 settings, ensure that " Usee HTTP1.1 through proxy
connections " is UNchecked.
Is Java (Sun) listed ? Which version shows if it is ?

Under Security, ensure these are checked :

Check for publisher's certificate revocation
Check for signatures on downloaded programs
Do not save encrypted pages to disk
Enable Integrated Windows Authentication
Use SSL 2.0
Use SSL 3.0
Use TLS 1.0
Warn about invalid site certificates
Warn if forms submittal is being redirected

Ensure that these are NOT checked :

Allow software to run or install even if the signature is invalid
Check for server certificate revocation
Enable Profile Assistant
Warn if changing between secure and not secure mode

If any changes were made, remember to click Apply, then OK when closing
Internet Options.

As the error message states, ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT, *some thing*
is blocking the system from connecting to the Update site.

What is the installed antivirus ?
Are there any security programs installed that may be interfering with
the system's ability to connect ?

Check the WindowsUpdate.log located in WINNT for any more error codes.

Well, thank you for the attempt, but that still didn't get it. I went through
each option you listed (except for "Allow software to run or install even if
the signature is invalid" - I don't seem to have that setting listed). It
still gave me the same error.

My installed antivirus program is Symantec Norton Antivirus 2004 - I have no
other security programs installed. The Sun Java version listed in the
security options section says "JRE 1.5.0_06". Hopefully, this won't be too
much information, but here is the most recent activity in WindowsUpdate.log:

The WindowsUpdate.log on this page :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941
shows the *exact* same error message as the log from your system does.

The issue is with NAV 2004. As to why ... could it be that it's poorly
written with little or no understanding of how Windows functions ?
OK, let's torture ourselves and visit Symantec's "Knowledge Base "
<shudder>.
Click on Support, then Technical Support.
Then click on "Solve it Myself".
Choose NAV 2004.
Enter " error 0x80072efd "
Result is :

> An error has occured while processing your request. Please click here to return to
> the Knowledge Base Search.

Click on "click here"
Result : Blank page that says " Done "
Oy.

Let's go back to the page that presents the products.
This time we'll choose from the Product Window --- NAV
From the version window, NAV 2004.
Nothing comes up.
Oy.

Let's go back. OK. On the NAV 2004 page , input " Can not do Windows
Updates "
Result > There is no web page matching your request. The page you are
looking for might
> have been removed, or the page address may be misspelled.
>
> You will be redirected to the default page in 30 secs. You can go there immediately
> by clicking here.

Result of " clicking here ": Http/1.1 Service Unavailable
Oy.

Seriously. If you want the system protected and have a stable OS,
uninstall NAV and obtain a AV that actually does what it claims to.
There are free AV's that function and protect very well.
Avast and AntiVir are two that I'd recommend.
Then there are free trial versions offered in conjunction with MS.
One of those is eTrust, from Computer Associates. It's good for one
year: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=1237002

You *may* find uninstalling NAV 2004 difficult and certain Windows
functions are broken. Comprehensive instructions for uninstalling NAV
and fixing the issues are here : http://basconotw.mvps.org/SymRem.htm

Sorry, that's the best I can do since Symantec's KB is broken :(

I've got Avast on my laptop anyway - I was only using Norton until my
subscription ran out anyway. I uninstalled Norton, and not even slightly
surprisingly, the uninstall failed the first time I tried it, so I used the
SymNRT removal utility. The point is, there should be no trace of Norton AV
left on my system. Before I installed Avast, I tried Microsoft Update again -
same exact message. The WindowsUpdate.log file still has the same information
as the last time. I really thought that would work, but it looks like the
problem remains.
