When trying to install SP1, I encounter the error 8007010B. I've tried all 8
suggested resolutions on the microsoft page, but no luck. I've searched the
forums, but the answer I encountered might as well have been Greek. I'm not
stupid, but that was beyond my computer expertise. I emailed Microsoft help,
and received some suggestions. But when I attempted to email the information
requested back to the support person, they all bounced back. I let them know
about the "bounce" problem, but the only answer I've gotten is that someone
forwarded my email to her. Since then, silence. Holiday weekend?

Any help will be appreciated.

Is Vista SP1 offered by Windows Update or are you attempting to install it
manually?

What is the email address that bounces?

In what country do you reside?

The email address that keeps bouncing is v-30...@mssupport.microsoft.com
Her name is Wang, so I even tried cwang instead of cwan - no luck

I'm in the USA. I first tried installing the SP1 offered by Windows Update,
but it failed. Then, at the suggestion of the support person, I downloaded
it and tried installing it from the desktop with a clean boot. I've also
tried safe mode. I've tried uninstalling my virus software (AVG). I checked
to be sure all the other updates had installed - they had.

I've got Vista Home Premium on a 64bit system. Intel Core 2 Asus P5K Pro
motherboard. I know what these components are but don't really know anything
about them. The guy who put my system together is flummoxed, too.

Today I also had a Microsoft support email bounce back to me. I guess I'll
try to resend tomorrow.
Maybe MS is having trouble migrating their servers to Linux. 8-)

There are only a handful of posts about this error in the entire MS
newsgroup database, so something's fishy here.

> The email address that keeps bouncing is v-30...@mssupport.microsoft.com

Try using v-30...@microsoft.com or cw...@microsoft.com instead (send to both
addresses).

> ...The guy who put my system together is flummoxed, too.

Take the machine back to him and show him what that error means:

8007010b = "The directory name is invalid"

[Personally, I think you're looking at a reinstall of Vista...and I think
the guy who "put [your] system together" should do it for free AND get SP1
installed for you while he's at it.]

That's our "last resort" plan. We were hoping to avoid it. But he's going to
do it and yes, for free - no question there! He tried all day yesterday to
get SP1 installed.

But what directory is invalid and why? All the other updates installed
without a hitch. Why wasn't the error listed on the Microsoft website? I
know the error is rare, but I'm not the only one who got it.

I appreciate your help! At least I'm not crazy.

[Personally, I think the problem was caused by how he installed Vista and
where Vista's files were located. If he upgraded the machine from, e.g.,
WinXP to Vista, he didn't do it properly.]

It was a clean install on a new machine. Any suggestions so we won't have
the problem again? I still have nightmares about reinstalling the old

Sorry! I thought the old message went through.

It was not an upgrade. It was installed on a new machine.

Do you have any suggestions to avoid the same problem?

My hints to "Stymied Jack" for getting some better diagnostics perhaps?

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&mid=a7a0d0e0-77ce-4c66-89dd-0e8ef93587c7&sloc=en-us

As I indicated to that poster I am prepared to help collaboratively,
e.g. answer specific questions about my suggestions,
but I won't spoonfeed.

To summarize what I was suggesting: get some context for that code
from the logs that the install attempt will have created.

If you don't get sufficient information about your symptom that way
a follow-up suggestion would be to run ProcMon to supplement
whatever messages that are produced during a retry attempt.

Well then, that would be relevant information to share with us too. ; )

by checking the logs, do you mean going into "events" and checking the
warnings, errors, information? I've been doing that - trying to check what
happened at the times the update failed - and trying to understand what I'm
seeing.

The suggestions I tried were:
uninstalling antivirus software and trying the update
doing a clean start and trying the update
running under safe mode and trying the update
the Microsoft web site suggested a "prepare to install" program and I tried
it

I will search for Proc Man and try that.

I just tried another install of SP1(64). I went to check updates on my
computer and followed the instructions. 3 other updates installed without a
hitch. But SP1 (offered) wouldn't. I went to my events viewer and tried to
construct a time-line of what happened during the attempted install. For
what its worth, here it is:

routine CoCreateInstance hr=0x80070005

3:17:39pm Volume Shadow Copy error an error – 0x8000ffff was encountered
while trying to initialize the registry writer. This may cause future shadow
copy creations to fail. (no help found on Microsoft event online help)

3:18:18pm Volume Shadow Copy Service Error – an internal inconsistency was
detected in trying to contact shadow copy service writers. The registry
writer failed to respond to a query from VSS. Please check to see that the
Event Serivce and Volume Shadow Copy service are operating correctly and
please check the Application event Log for any other events (no help found

No. What did I tell Stymied Jack...

http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&mid=a7a0d0e0-77ce-4c66-89dd-0e8ef93587c7&sloc=en-us

look for some context in your logs, e.g. search your harddrive(s) for
all files which contain that code which were written to by the update.

In fact, such a specific search is not possible but what is possible is to
search for files which contain the string, which were created or changed
on the day that you ran the update; then sort the results list by Date Modified;
then scroll to the minutes when the update was run. Chances are that
there are only a few files which will be found which fit all those criteria,
so then to examine them all you need to do is drag them one at a time
to an open Notepad window and do finds in there.

All those things are not on a diagnostics tack.
You're just changing things and hoping that they are
the right things to change, before you have any idea
what is really wrong.

>

Before you do that look at the files that you can find simply by searching
your harddrive for that code, on that day...

On second thought, what is your code about again...

<cmd_output OS="XPsp2">
E:\>set /a c = 0x10B
267
E:\>net helpmsg %c%

The directory name is invalid.
</cmd_output>

Oh yes, some (unknown) directory name is "invalid"
Ok, in this case, you might get some new details
just as simply by running ProcMon.

Good luck

Becky I to have struck the exact same problem as you. This is the third time
I have installed vista ultimate 64, and will probably be the last time. My
PC is a very well built powerful spec machine that dual boots XP and XP 64
Pro with 8GB of RAM. I am a professional photographer and this latest MS OS
has wasted so much of my valuable time that I am about to permanently wipe
it off my PC. The only way around this problem I believe is to buy Vista
SP1. I refuse to throw away anymore money on this rubbish!

Even Intel won't use Vista...ditto for many other businesses.

As I have previously stated in this newsgroup I believe Vista 64 to be the
worst software release ever!!

Cheers

Ron

That's often a sign of a permissions problem. ProcMon could help identify
that too.

Looks like a programmer throwing up his hands thinking "this should never
happen..." (BTDT) ; )

But did you try what the message suggests? ; )

FWIW it is not clear to me that this set of errors would necessarily have anything
to do with an update. Perhaps all an update would need to be able to do is stop
the service? In that case if you consistently see these messages in relation to a
failing update, I would probably try just stopping it manually first.

BTW while researching this I discovered that I have that same service in XP.
Who knew? ; ) Obviously I have never seen it running on my system.

Also, were you looking in the System Event Log or the Application Event Log?
I suspect the former; otherwise why would there be a message in it about the latter? <eg>

In any case if this is only what you are finding in the Event logs you should still
be looking for context in the update's install log (and any other diagnostic files
the update has written to.)

Good luck
