How to get rid of FrontPage Server Extensions?

I just received my weekly Critical Update productivity killer.

This week, it features "FrontPage Server Extensions". Funny thing is, I've
never wanted or installed Frontpage, and I don't have Office on my PC. So,
it's safe to assume Microsoft installs it on every Windows XP machine.

I don't want to patch it, I want to get rid of it! How do I uninstall these
silly and buggy server extensions? It's not listed in Add..Remove programs.
Can I just regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web
server extensions\40\bin\fp4autl.dll" and delete it?

Unless I hear otherwise, that's what I'll do and I'll recommend all my
colleagues to do the same.

Here's how to get rid of it: (First sign on to XP as administrator)

FrontPage Server Extensions administrators can uninstall FrontPage Server
Extensions in Add or Remove programs
1.. From the Start button, choose Control Panel.
2.. Select Add or Remove programs.
3.. Select Add/Remove Windows Components.
4.. Select "Internet Information Services (IIS)" and choose "Details.".
5.. Uncheck "FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions" and choose OK.
6.. Choose Next in the Windows Components Wizard and choose Finish.
Most confusing. I though MS had installed Front Page Server Extensions on
my new XP Pro box but no, they are NOT installed. The box in step 5 above
was NOT checked and yet I have been offered the critical patch today at
Windows Update. But I see now that the critical patch has been offered to
me (and probably you and many others) erroneously based, I think, on the
presence of that file. But if the extensions are NOT installed by default
,and Microsoft states in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-051 that this is
the case for XP, then unless you or I or someone installed those extensions
on our boxes we do NOT need the patch nor do you need to uninstall something
that you have never installed. So go see if the extensions are installed on
your box. Sounds like they are not from what you have said. I believe
MS03-051 is incorrect when it states : " If you have the fp4awel.dll file
you your system, you have FrontPage Server Extensions 2000 installed ". I
have this file but the extensions have NOT been installed so I don't need
the patch. Microsoft says only those who were offered the patch in November
need it and I was not offered it in November.

States at 1-866-PCSafety (1-866-727-2338). No charge for issues concerning
security fixes.

For some reason, I have yet to receive the revised MS03-051 in my email. I
hope I haven't somehow gotten inadvertently removed from the List Serve.

Thanks for the information. As you predicted, Frontpage 2000 Server
Extensions was not checked/installed, so this critical patch is bogus.

I'd believe it if MS told me that they installed the files with a clean
WinXP install but did not activate them, and thus are simply updating the
files in the off-chance that I do install the server extensions, but if that
were true, shame on them for putting the files in the Program Files
directory. Again, that's just a theory.

However, I'm unable to delete the files because they are protected by System
File Protection, and these files appear attached to various GUIDs in the
registry. It sure feels like they are installed.

So, somewhere along the line, Microsoft lied to us. I hope they feel the
brunt of whatever punishment is due to them for giving 30 million users this
needless headache (bad press, negative user backlash, etc.)

There was a problem with the updated detection for this patch - the patch
itself *is not bogus*. This has been fixed and if you have never installed
Front Page Server Extensions you should not now be offered the patch (it
will not do any harm if you did install it, however - for those that did).

Thank you for the information Kari. As you said, the detection seems to be
working now and it is not showing up in my Critical Updates list.

I too am no longer showing the patch as a critical update. That is good. I
however spent an hour on the phone yesterday with Microsoft support about
this. The engineer was very nice but he knew absolutely nothing about this
issue! He did tell me that if I had never installed the extensions that (as
I already thought) I did not need the patch. He thought though that the
patch might continue to be offered to me and suggested I used chat in
Windows Update if that happened. I read him your earlier post but he still
had no idea about the basis for this problem. He was more interested in
asking me about my Christmas shopping.

Last time I called Microsoft about a critical patch problem it was two years
ago and support was still in the U.S. not India. It was excellent then. I
can't say that now! If support was still in this country,as it should be,
I'm sure the engineer would have been aware of this issue. It was quite
obvious that MS has told these techs in India to pretend to be in the U.S.
by asking about Christmas shopping, etc. How ridiculous.
