76 updates that I can't install

Windows Update was stuck at trying to install Windows Installer 3.1. I got
Installer 3.1 to install and Windows update then listed 76 other updates I
need.
Problem is, none of these 76 updates will install.
I then tried just installing the first three - no success.
Tried installing just the first in the list - no success.
Tried installing from the MS update webpage - it downloaded the files but
couldn't install.
I tried what someone said in another thread worked for him - set Windows
Update to automatically download and install.
I did that (set it to automatically DL and install at 2 p.m. PST) but I
still have that huge bunch of updates waiting to be installed.
Should I post all the entries in Windowsupdate.log since 2 p.m. PST today.
It's very very long.

YES, it's a CRITICAL security update !!! The update refers to .NET
Framework SP1, *not* XP's Service Pack 2.
WHAT is the installed antivirus software ? The system was able to
'repair' itself in Safe Mode, then it's reasonable to theorize that the
Services/Protections of said AV that *may* have caused this issue do NOT
Run or do not exist when the OS is booted to Safe Mode.
Until you can ascertain what the cause was, it will occur again.
Since there is ALSO an issue installing the Security update for .NET
Framework 1.1, the most likely cause for BOTH issues is the
***installed antivirus or security software ***

Matty - I cannot conclude that the system was able to repair itself because
it was in Safe Mode because I never tried running Dial-a-Fix in Normal mode.
I simply followed the instructions in Engel's link which said that CClean
and Fix-a-Dial should be ran in Safe mode. After running Dial-a-Fix in Safe
mode, I then rebooted then ran Windows Update while in Normal mode.
I'm reading through the links that you gave and also looking at the posts

I have Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0. I don't have 1.0 or 1.1.
So, it would seem that I have to uninstall 2.0 and 3.0; install 1.1 then

English, that means that their *totally* independent of each other.
There is no need to install .NET Framework 3 if .NET Framework 1.1 is
installed. Whichever application/program that requires the Framework
will notify you of that requirement.

I wish Microsoft would have specific error messages pop up when an update

didn't have .NET Framework 1.1 nor 1.0. There's no 1.1 to uninstall. And,
because I didn't have 1.1, I also do not have 1.1 updates to uninstall.

Note - I tried to stick to the reboot after each uninstall but I sometimes
"cheated" and risked missing a few reboots. Patience is not one of my
computer virtues.
3. Installed Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 - rebooted
4. Installed Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 SP1 - rebooted
5. Installed KB928366 - yeheyyy!!!! finally!!! - rebooted
Then installed the two other .NET Framework versions because they were in my
list of installed programs before.
6. Installed Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 - rebooted
7. Installed KB928365 (security update for MS.NET Framework 2.0) - rebooted
8. Installed Microsoft.NET Framework 3.0 - rebooted
And now, all is well with my Windows Update.
I then installed the two other hotfixes queued in Windows Update: KB873374
and KB885884.
MS Update didn't find and list any more updates that need to be installed.

Now, the only problem remaining is my nonfunctional System Restore (which
