evidently this solution corrected the problem. after i downloaded and
installed as you suggested i went to windows update and 38 security updates
were downloaded and installed.

I re-installed Windows Install v.3.1 , and I still get failures to install
for auto updates

Security Update for Excel 2003 (KB905756)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB913161)
Update for Outlook 2003 (KB913807)

You might want to look at my post about Auto Update Problem. It will tell
you other ways to correct the problem that I have with Auto Updates for 2003
(SP2)

I attempted this "fix" and found that the install got part of the way
through, crashed, and then backed out of what it did so far. The final error
message state that Windows installer was only partially update and might not
work properly. I have tried everything to install this update and it has all
failed. Can someone help?
