I keep recieving the same error msg since I recently tried to update my
system on Windows Update:

(0x800A138F)

I don't know if that means a whole lot, but it doesn't even try to look, it
just starts and than finishes a second later with an error.

Also recently, I've been having trouble accessing https:// sites and logging
into Windows Messanger. I've tried changing the security settings on my IE
6 browser, but to no avail.

Is there something I'm missing?

Seth - you're not alone. I've been expreriencing the same
problem on my XP machine since mid-October. Even
reinstalled the operating system, but still the same
problem. Even if there were some manual way to perform the
update check and downlowd, it might help.

I tried to uninstall Internet Explorer, but it wouldn't
let me.

Have you resolved your issue?

To the numerous people that've asked me if I've resolved
the issue -- Yes, I have.

I managed to isolate the problem to a certain piece of
software recently installed on this machine that had
modified some of my internet settings, and not only
blocked WinUpdt, but also all secure internet traffic as
well. That piece of software, I think I can mention it,
is called Download Accelerator Plus, which was installed
yetsterday. I did a system restore from a point before
yesterday and all things are well again on the computer.

I then went ahead and installed the SP1 that I had laying
around in my downloads folder and then updated
successfully from the v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
website.

I suspect, since it started happening only after an
install, that the Registry was modified in some way as to
block/disable certain kinds of traffic. I could be wrong,
however, as I read Laura's case.

Laura, are you doing a fresh install, deleting the
partition in the XP setup, formatting it, and then
reinstalling it or are you just layering another
installation over the one you have now?

I just did a fresh install after a zero fill and now, I
can't get there either. It was working fine before the
install, but I had other issues. The only thing different
is that while surfing a few minutes ago, I encountered a
download prompt for Kontiki software, which is also a
download accellerator. Seems the well meaning programs do
more damage than they are worth.
I'll post back again if I figure this one out, I'm sure
I'm not the only one. (BTW, I didn't isntall the kontiki
software, that may have contributed to the problem.

I was using the browser installed by the OS, it seems that
was my problem, so if you can go to www.microsoft.com.ie
and download the latest version of IE, this MAY solve the
problem. When I installed IE 5.5 (Special SP on my modem
disk) I was able to get to Windows Update and it worked
fine. I can only add a coupel of things here, and that is
that you can click "Restore Defaults" or add the servers
at windows update to the trusted sites list. LAstly, look
in your hosts file and make sure none of the Microsoft
sites are listed in it, otherwise, they would be blocked.

ALSO - NEVER POST YOUR REAL EMAIL HERE - I got 6 emails
with false patches in them, all the files were infected
with virii ( a virus, or more than one virus ) -
!!!!MICROSOFT NEVER DISTRIBUTES PATCHES THRU EMAIL!!!!
