Hi,

everytime I visit microsoft-update I get the errormessage 0x80090305 and
cannot download any updates. I tried to find a solution at microsoft and
on the net with no result. As I also cannot connect to ssl-sites with the
IE I first applied a fix with an instruction found in the MS-Knowledgebase.

(There were some postings on a board I found via google dated by 2004
about a virus causing this problem; I tried several virus scanners
(Kaspersky to Symantec) with no result. (The virusscanner was the third
thing to install, so I don't believe that there was a chance for such an
old virus.))

Windows-update and afterwards microsoft-update were working properly on
first execution. The history was available but is not available now. From
this point on I had no chance to get updates anymore.

Automatic updates are enabled and I can even now change the point of time
of installtion, but the updates will not be installed. (I can change it
directly and from the microsoft-update-site.)

I tried to downgrad to older versions of windows-update with no result.

The WGA worked and is now working properly with additional downloads from
the microsoft-website.

I removed almost the complete network-functionality from the machine and
reinstalled it (I'm writing this on the affected installation).

Installing the OS from beginning would have been faster - I know that, but
that's not a solution for the problem and I worry about the problem
occuring on with a new installation again.

Any help/idea to fix that problem will be much appreciated.

First of all, thank you very much for your fast reply :-)

That's the log; I tried it manually just before I posted.

You suggested searching the newsgroup; please believe me: I'm doing
nothing else since having that problem (the only exception is the time I
used for trying the suggestions I found to solve the ssl-problem.)

regsvr32 schannel.dll

Click OK. You should receive a notification of the successfull or
unsuccessfull registration of the file.
Now do the same for these files, clicking OK after inputting each one :

rsabase.dll

rsaenh.dll

Which version of XP and what Service Pack level is it at ?

I get the unsuccessfull message:

"schannel.dll was loaded, but the DLLRegisterServer Entry Point was not
found.
This file could not be registered."

rsabase.dll was not found on my system - also not when searching for it.
Wasn't this dll replaced with rsaenh.dll?

rsaenh.dll was successfull.

I'm using Windows XP SP2 (OEM).

Web accelerator programs or other programs may have added static IP entries for the
Windows Update Web site to the Hosts file.

Even if you're not using a Web accelerator program, check the Hosts file.

Use Notepad to view and check the contents of the Hosts file (note you can edit the
Hosts file using Notepad)
Now ignore all lines beginning with # in the first column
Check to see if there are entries referring to Windows Update and delete them.
(NB: As always it's a great idea to back up before making any changes you're not sure
of just in case)
Now save the file you're just edited.

Example: -.http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/

Locating the Hosts files -
for Windows XP - WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc

I don't use any additional programs for my internet-connection, as I don't
need them.

At the moment there's no Hosts-file in use, as I disabled; until the
problem occurred I was using the old version 1.2 of the "HostsMan" (I
tested the version 2.1, but didn't it - version 3 is still Beta, so I
don't try it as I already have problems). The program was once hosted on
mvps-website - perhaps you know it.

I found the program you refer to. Never needed to use one.
It was just a thought that perhaps something in your Hosts file was blocking WU.

JM,

If schannel.dll is not present then run sfc/ scannow. There should be 2
copies of it present, one in WINDOWS\system32 and a backup in
WINDOWS\system32\dll cache.
Then reregister schannel.dll.

You are correct about the second file, rsaenh.dll.

Why are you excusing yourself?

You are trying to help me and often enough the hosts-file is the problem
and your suggestion the solution. :-|

Please read the reply below.

Thank you for help :-)

Hi MowGreen,

please let me say sorry for the late reply in the first place :-| (I was
away for job-related reasons without a chance to read and test.)

But the most important: That's the solution for this (my) problem :-)))

What happened:

As suggested by you I executed the command and there were in fact
(several) files missing (the pop-up told me).

Windows asked me to insert the "original" cd several times without
accepting it, but it finally replaced the missing dlls. (I looked it up
via Explorer-search.) Perhaps I should have inserted the cd before
executing the command ;-).

Then I registered the schannel.dll from within the system32-directory.

I got the success-message this time and I immediately tried
microsoft-update and it worked.

I cannot really tell you how lucky I felt after this long period.

Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge, your endurance and keeping
up my spirit :-))

I really hope that somebody will help you when you're in need of it.

Regards
JM
