I use Windows Automatic Update to install my updates. Just recently, it shows
to update to Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable (v2). I have it update but
it says that it could not be installed. I tried going to Microsoft's website
to download it myself, and do both "Run" and "Save" but I still get an error
that states it could not be installed. Then it proceeds to uninstall that
package and reboot my computer.

I've searched on MS's website and other sites on the internet, no such luck.

Anyone else ran into this problem and how can I fix this?

Are you stating the no updates have been installed in over 2 years ?
The KB893803v2.log shows that the Windows Installer installed on 8/1/2005
Did you reboot the system afterwards or is there a message that Windows
Installer could not be installed that prevented a reboot ?

Please go to Start > Run > type in

eventvwr.msc

Click OK or press Enter

In the left frame, click on Application
In the right frame, click on Source
This will group the entries according to the Source
Scroll down to MsiInstaller
Now look under Type and see if there is an Error listed for
08/01/2005 for MsiInstaller
If there is, double click on it
Under the up and down arrows there is a file icon
Click on that to copy the information
Now right click into your Reply and choose Paste
This will paste the information from the Application event log into your
Reply

I am sorry you are going through this problem. I recently started having the
exact same problem as you! It is very frustrating! I have been working on
this for days! I am going to take it to my computer guy. I've tried just
about everything. If you get a solution please let me know?

I am having a similar issue that I cannot install Windows Installer 3.1 V2 to
replace problems encountered with Service Pack 3 updates to my Windows XP
Media Center Edition version of Windows Installer. I did everything in the
support.microsoft.com/kb/315346 service note to deal with my initial problem
however Service Pack 3 prevents me from installing (step 12 in Method 2) the
required executables within my system32 Windows folder.

Start button --> RUN --> type in:
winver
--> Click OK.

Come back and let us know the exact flavor (the top picture - MCE 2002, MCE
2005?) of windows you have and the exact version (copy the "version" line
verbatim.)

Might need to use your original Windows XP CD (perhaps with SP3 integrated
first) and perform an SFC /SCANNOW.

Then...

Download/Install the latest Windows Installer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/details.aspx?familyid=5A58B56F-60B6-4412-95B9-54D056D6F9F4&displaylang=en

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely - you may uninstall if desired.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net stop wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\wups2.dll
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net start wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:

Close all Internet Explorer Windows and other applications.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
--> Click OK.

(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...

Reboot.

Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer and
visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM scan...
(Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.)

Once the scan is done, select just ONE of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.

Reboot again.

If it did work - try it again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a time. The
Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend against
the Windows Search one. I would completely avoid the Optional Hardware
updates.

Come back - let us know!

Excellent detailed instructions solved my problem. Many Thanks Shenan!

Some additional details:
1. winver identified Windows Version 5.1 (Build 2600.XPSP.080413-2111
:Service Pack 3)
2. SFC /SCANNOW was used for first time and identified that my Disc 2 was
not recognized, which is a separate issue.
3. Superantispyware detected 1 trojan and was quarantined.
4. malwarebytes identified 5 infected objects and were removed.
5. Annual Update of third party tax software loaded properly.
6. Time for a back-up.......

Regards,
Retired
