The link you have suggested (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798)

Per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798, I tried the following:

- Restarted "Cryptographic Services"
- Re-registered DLL files that are associated with "Cryptographic
Services"
- Removed the hidden attribute from %Windir% and from its subfolders
- Deleted kb*.cat files from {F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}
and {127D0A1D-4EF2-11D1-8608-00C04FC295EE} in %systemroot%
\System32\CatRoot\
- Deleted the contents of C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution directory

But nothing helped.

Try using the information from that article anyway.
The code means there is a problem with certificates
and encryption.

Oh. Do you also later get a 0x80070002?

Otherwise it looks as if you are going to have to be doing
some diagnosis. Try using ProcMon to supplement
whatever diagnostics your install attempts are producing. ; )

Good luck

Robert,

I tried every simgle suggestion from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798,
but none of them helped.

This is the complete log I am getting when run Windows6.0-KB940157-
x86.msu. It has two error references:

FATAL: CBS called Error with 0x80092004

WARNING: Exit code = 0x00000000; Call error code = 0x80240022

Can you please take a look and see if there is anything else that I
could've missed that is critical to determining the root cause of this
error?

If the problem is the install you will have much better diagnostics
available than the WU log. That is just a summary report
for an install.

Also, you could download the update and install it manually.
That would make your symptoms completely independent
of the update distribution mechanism (WU).

In either case, the most information about an install's failure
would be in other files (usually ones which have the update's
name in them or in the case of Vista you may also find extra
details in its CBS.log.

And as I mentioned, if necessary you could supplement
whatever you do find with a ProcMon trace. ProcMon
could also be used to help find what all is available
if you have trouble finding changed files through normal,
more direct, means.

I think your other codes are about other services and processes
which may be interfering with the update. So, having it to install
manually and doing it during a safe mode boot might be a way
of avoiding such problems. Or that might just generate a new
set of symptoms and give you a different perspective on what
all is needed to get this update installed. In particular I don't
know if Cryptographic Services would be running during a safe
mode boot; so if you still needed that running to do the install
you might have to start it manually first. Etc.

Good luck

I am running a stad-alone installing file: Windows6.0-KB940157-
x86.msu. ProcMon did not give me much after I have carefully reviewed
it. I did find more information in the CBS.log file. Can you please
help me analyze it? Here is what it has related to my problem:

getting, but not sure what I can learn from it:

Yes. It looks as if this may be bogus and the real cause
of the problem is that missing hash.

Also, did I see a reference to RU somewhere in the log?
Then is this a Russian version you are trying to install?
Yet I'm also seeing instances of EN-US mixed up in the log.
Are you sure you are trying to install the correct version?

Perhaps it's just a bit buggy? <eg>

Unfortunately since this is an optional update I don't think
you would get any free support from MS (apart from the
kind you saw being offered in the forum of that other discussion
I found for you.) Otherwise, perhaps you should try
collaborating with others, who would have either avoided
your problem symptom or run into the same one with
similar or identical environments.

Good luck

This is an EN-US version of Windows and all the programs I have on
this laptop. I did install Rusian Language Pack, but I am not using
it. KB940157 Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista SP1 hotfix is a
required update, not optional.
