Did that get it installed ?
If not, what antivirus/security[firewall] suite is installed ?

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, running that installer , I get the
same useful error message, :"Install failed with error number 0x8000FFFF"
I'm running Windows Defender, NOD32 and Spybot Search & Destroy (without the
active scanning agent, Teatimer)

I have the SAME error? Doesn't anybody from Microsoft monitor these posts
-- this issue was identified over 1 YEAR AGO! Where is the fix?!?!
Doesn't anybody at Microsoft care?!?!?!

Doubtful. Vista wasn't a product over a year ago...
Try a search? In my cache I have 67 messages including yours which
mention that code. Going back one I find poster doventrout thanking
T2 and TaurArian for sharing a solution from MS Support:

That was only 3 days ago. Even though your web interface search doesn't
order results by date it shouldn't be that hard to find.
Hint: if you want to do a search of an archive of this newsgroup you can
use Google Groups and then click on Sort by date. Google Groups archives
have a longer retention period than the Communities archives but don't
always have all the messages that the Communities archives do.
So if you want the most recent results you are more likely to find them
in the Communities archives but then have the disadvantage of not being
able to order them by date.

Is your OS Vista? AFAIK this tip applies only to Vista users.

Diagnose your symptoms (or refine your symptom description.)
Don't depend on others' solutions to work for you just because
you happen to see the same code somewhere, particularly if yours
is occurring in a different OS or even just a different product.
Also, to avoid confusion, if your symptoms are different from the ones
being discussed, start your own thread with a more descriptive
Subject.

Your Me too! post contains no information for anyone to help you with.
Also note that the OP has a different OS so you can not even be discussing
the same problem. Please start a *new* discussion with a more descriptive
Subject and complete symptom description if you really want help with
your problem.

I have a new Dell inspiron 531 running Windows Vista home premium.
It came pre-installed with MSWorks 8.0
Right off the bat there were problems with Windows Update giving Error
8000FFFF
5 days later Windows Update has installed several updates on it's own, but
has NEVER manually done an update successfully.
In addition, I cannot install MS Office 2007.
I get the error 0x8007054F.
I think the two problems are related.
I further think this may be due to a poor Dell install/configuration from
the start.
Let's have some resolutions please.
So at least your Me too! post is about the same OS as the
Original Poster... (good)

Which probably means "unknown error"...

Very likely. <eg>
<cmd_output OS="XPsp2">
F:\>set /a c =0x54F
1359
F:\>net helpmsg %c%
An internal error occurred.
</cmd_output>

So far all you have given us is that (perhaps) "an internal error occurred".
Look in the logs for the context of these codes. Then perhaps someone
will be able to make some more suggestions.

and after days of trying to solve these errors and at last Vista said to me:
My son take this award, you have this error (8000FFFF), and then it returned
to show that two errors. While trying to solve this problem I was thinking
about operating systems, and thinking about my experience, 8 years of using
computers and Windows 98, 95, 3.11, Mellenium, 2000, XP, and Vista. I found
that we were using unstable operating systems which were hanging, restarting,
and virus & hacker attackable, while UNIX based operating systems like Apple
Macintosh and all editions and versions of Linux and JAVA based operating
systems like Solaris are not, and some of these operating systems are free.
Microsoft wasts a Bilions of dolars and a Bilions of security fixes, making
you wasting mony. Every Windows comes slower than the version before, comes
with a new technology but older and comes with a new security solutions but
weaker.
At the end, didn't asked your self why am I using Windows?
Thank you for good listining, send me your thoughts.
Can you give my tool a shot to see if it helps:

If not, we might can look at the logs it creates in c:\aulogs to narrow
this down some more.

I have had the same problem with the Windows update. I was stumped but
after reading these posts I figured maybe it had to do with my virus
protection.
What I did was disabled it and then ran the update. It worked!

I spent HOURS talking to a Microsoft tech only to figure it out myself by
doing online research.
If you have 2 - 2GB memory cards in your computer, take one out and reboot.
Then try to install the updates. This should work. Good Luck!
There is no such limit in Vista 64 bit [x64].

Apparently, it wasn't corrected properly hence the need for KB929777
being released.

Just encountered same issues. Tried solution from Cloventrout dates Sep
30 as
follows:
1. Click on Start and in the Search box type in regedit.
2. A new program will be listed in the same window. now right click the
regedit program and then select the option run as administrator.
3. Now go into HKLM\COMPONENTS and check if these three values exist
under
the COMPONENT Key
1. PendingXmidentifier
2. NextQueueEntryIndex
3. AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving
I do not have the HKLM\COMPONENTS in the program so this solution does
not
work for me. Any other solutions to this problem ?

As I mentioned previously (in fact in response to the message that this clones)
that must be a specific example of the symptom for a different cause
than the one posters in this thread are probably having.
So you will have to do your own diagnosis and find your own resolution.
Good luck
