See if you can update manually :

How to manually download the latest definition updates for Windows Defender
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923159/

Error code 80070005 translates to ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED
Is the system experiencing issues installing any other updates ?

Hello, I too have had the same problem with both codes recently and tried to
install it manually for both and it said it did but when I went to check it
gave me the error code 0x80070643 again. Is there a different step to be
taken? I also went into help and it said that code was because office support
was disabled but mine was not..So I am kind of lost as well.
Thanx!

It is pretty bad, but rather typical, when Microsoft won't even get things to
work correctly. They obviously don't have a fix or answer, so typical.

This comment is so true. It is now September 2009, and i still have this
problem with this darn code. Do we have a fix-it for this problem yet?

This very old thread describes several different problems. Please start a new
thread describing exactly what *your* problem is, including which operating
system you are using and which service pack is installed, and hopefully someone
will be able to help.

Harry.

Error message when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web sites
to install updates on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003:
0x80070005
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968003

Not running those editions of Windows ? Then start a new thread and
provide some relevant details instead of tagging onto a thread from
2007: How to ask a question

When all else fails....

I had this similar/same problem and the only way I found to resolve it was
to first uninstall Windows Defender, & then reinstall it again. That has
probably been suggested on this thread before but give it a try anyway.

good-luck,

Then maybe you should...

1. Read the rest of the replies to this thread from June 2007?

2. Begin your own, new thread about your problem and computer?
