I have Windows XP Pro. For the past few weeks, Microsoft updates have been
causing me serious problems. Today, RegSeeker quit working right after I
downloaded and installed the new Microsoft updates. I did a system restore
to a restore point that I created prior to installing the updates and
RegSeeker worked fine again.

Two weeks ago, the updates caused my pc to not fully boot. I had to boot
into Safe Mode and uninstall the updates and my pc worked fine again.

Last week the updates caused my pc to drag along as if it were 15 yrs old
and everything was choppy. I did another system restore to a point prior to
the updates being installed and my pc worked fine again.

Today the new updates that I downloaded and installed caused RegSeeker to
stop working and maybe other programs wouldn't have worked, but I didn't try
to run any others to see. If it weren't for the fact that I wanted to spend
today getting my pc in shape, which included running RegSeeker, I wouldn't
have known that today's updates caused program(s) to stop working and it
might have been too late for me to do a System Restore in a few weeks because
all restore points prior to today would no longer have been in my pc.

What's going on with Microsoft's updates? All they're causing is serious
problems for me! I have a registered version of Windows so I shouldn't have
any problems with the updates.

At this time I think buying Windows XP Prof. was a waste of money and TIME!
Since the purchase (complete system) it took me one month and a half to get
all software running without conflicts. A short moment of joy, as everything
was running fast, stable and surfing on the net was faster than ever.
But then... an automatic update f####d the system.
Booting ok, but as soon as internet connection is made, everything is a drag.
Surfing is no fun anymore, as it sometimes takes more than a minute just to
open a website.
Restoring to a point prior to the update is useless, no matter how far in
history I go back. I guess some systemfiles were overwritten.
This really s###s.
I tried to seek answers to the problem on the net (with mmmmmmuch patience),
but none found.
Thanks a lot Microsoft.

Where can I find software that (actually) finds and repairs errors in my
Windows XP prof. system?

Dorre, this might help. If you go into Control Panel > Add/Remove New
Programs and place a check mark in the box of the window that opens at the
top to display updates, the updates that were installed will show up. You
can highlight them and then click on them to remove any or all updates that
Microsoft installed. If you want to turn off automatic updates (I did),
Start > Control Panel > Security Center, and on the options on the left,
choose "Change the way Security Center alerts me." Uncheck all three boxes,
and also click on the large words Automatic Updates and turn it off.

There is a risk to doing this. You'll no longer get updates that can
protect your computer. I've found other methods that protect my computer
that work better than Microsoft updates and Windows Firewall. I turned off
Windows Firewall and downloaded and installed Sygate Firewall which works
much better. I also installed several adware/malware/anti-virus programs.
BitDefender v 8 (free version), AdAware, SpyBot, a-squared, McAfee Stinger,
CW Shredder and Windows Defender. I also remove a lot of unneeded/obsolete
files with RegSeeker (free). I've used these programs for about 1-2 years
and I've had no problems with any of them.

If you install Sygate, you'll be surprised at the number of cookies that are
placed in your pc without your knowledge. Windows firewall lets them through
without you knowing it. Sygate will ask you if you want to allow the
cookied. If it's a site that you use often, you can check "always allow" and
it'll never ask you again. If it's a site that you never want to receive a
cookie, you can check "never allow". If it's a site that you're not sure
about, you can check "don't allow" but not check the box to have Sygate
always take that action.

All of the names of the programs will show up when you Google them. I like
to go to MajorGeeks for programs because I then know that they're safe.
There are a lot more programs out there but I was selective and I also wanted
programs that I didn't have to buy.

I also take advantage of the free on-line scans:

TrendSysClean (takes a couple of hours) http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Trojan Scan http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

If all else fails or if you don't want to do the above, you can uninstall
and reinstall Windows XP Pro.

When you hit that golden moment, image the drive to be able to restore it.
Ghost, Acronis and BootItNG are available drive imaging programs.
Windows' System Restore does an incomplete job, as you have found.

Guided Help is a new feature at Microsoft Search to help repair things:

Ghost, Acronis and BootItNG are programs that I'd consider and I'm going to
look into them. I use EmergencyUtils and have msconfig, regedit and taskmgr
to fall back on, so imaging is important and I'm glad you mentioned it.

I personally think tha Guided Help at Microsoft is like handing Daniel to
the lions. Tweaks just aren't going to help. System Restore by Microsoft
should have restored my pc to exactly the way it was when I created the
restore point but it didn't because it wanted some files to remain in my pc.
Microsoft isn't out to help others, only itself. I've found it to be
untrustworthy and I'll rely on other means before I think about turning to
Microsoft's programs and products.

The slowness is attributed to the WUPDATE.EXE causing 100% CPU utilization.
It shows as SVCHOST.EXE causing the high CPU but the WUPDATE.EXE thread is
what's causing the SVCHOST.EXE to spike. Disable the Automatic Updates and
it will return to normal. When there are new updates, just run it manually.
Trust me, I have been pissed about this too but I found it running CPU
Watcher.

MS has decided to show consideration for the user in making it
simple to complete procedures to fix things that are complex manually.
Unless there's a catch or gotcha, this seems like an improvement.

You need to boot from the Ghost CD to restore the system drive.
Terabyte's BootItNG wants a small Fat32 partition; their BootItNG
beats their Image for Windows. I haven't used Acronis; Galen likes it:
http://kgiii.info/windows/all/advanced/image-clone.html
All of them require that you make an image to restore from
which can not be stored in the partition they're backing up.

When I disabled automatic updates, my pc's performance didn't improve.
a-squared gave me a message that said: "WgaTray.exe - While executing, the
program a² detected a possible malicious behavior. The program tries to

found this thread:

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,16220001~mode=flat

I rebooted my pc and told a-squared to delete the file. My pc runs even
faster now.

I was wondering why I received no response to this post from a pro. You all
ought to be ashamed of yourselves. I was having problems with my pc and not
one of you told me it was due to spyware that was downloaded and installed in
my pc under the guise of a security fix. I feel like my own dog bit me!

I won't be back to Microsoft forums again. I'll go to MajorGeeks or
GeeksToGo for honest answers to my questions and pc problems.

Goodbye, and I'm brushing the dirt off the bottom of my feet as I leave.

No, it doesn't take 10 hours. The time bar goes up and down and I have a 40G
hd and it took about 2 hrs.

I've been using MajorGeeks Forum for years also. They gave me these
procedures to follow and they're very thorough. Some scans take 15 mins,
others take up to 2 hrs, but I now know for sure that I have no viruses,
trojans, malicious spyware, etc. This is what they gave me:

Follow ALL the steps and then post HERE:

You'll have to register with them first as you did here. They'll answer all
your questions, even if it puts Microsoft in a bad light. They're very
knowledgeable and computer gurus. Good luck.

Microsoft is willing to recommend effective anti-malware programs that
others
have developed. Lavasoft AdAware SE for spyware (free - on the right)
and
F-Secure for viruses (6 month free trial - down at the bottom) at the

It's like searching for a needle in a haystack.

The links that I gave you are all free and extremely thorough. When you've
finished, you'll know exactly what you have in your pc, with no doubt
whatsoever. Adaware is good but you need to use the other programs along
with Adaware if you suspect a Trojan, virus, worm, malicious spyware, etc.
It took me about 8 hrs to run all of the scans that are listed in the link
that I posted, but I have complete piece of mind that I have none of those
problems in my pc. The problem that I have is with the updates that
Microsoft has been sending and which I downloaded and installed in my pc.
When I've downloaded the last 3 updates, each time my pc had very serious to
semi-serious problems. When I removed the updates, my pc worked well again.

As I said in a previous thread, the program named a-squared found spyware
that Microsoft placed in my pc with one of their updates. The name of the
file is WgaTray.exe When I removed the program, my pc's speed doubled.
This is a portion of the previous thread:

[Quote]a-squared gave me a message that said: "WgaTray.exe - While

invisibly download and install files from the internet. I Googled it and

a-squared will ask you if you want to allow the program access one time, all
the time, deny access or delete the file. The first time I chose to allow
access one time. After I checked into the above url, I rebooted and used the
option to delete the file. As I said, deleting it improve my pc's
performance 200%.

There's no sense in using a bandaid when you have a knife stuck in your
back. AdAware run by itself is a bandaid.

I'm no longer going to be receiving notifications that there's been a
response to this thread. I hope that you and anyone else experiencing
problems try the steps as outlined in:

on all Windows versions.

And 2 programs that need to be run in Safe Mode with Networking:
Bit Defender
Panda Active Scan

The url's and directions for how to download and run all of these programs
are at
http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407
are on the page:

Once you run all of these programs, and they do take about 8 hours to
complete all of them, your mind will be at ease because you'll know for a
certainty that your computer is clean. It might seem a little excessive but,
together, the programs search every byte in your pc. Running all of these
programs isn't something that needs to be done once a week or once a month,
but they can be run when you have problems with your pc, when you want to
clean out the junk files in your pc, and you can run them one at a time, here
and there, to make certain that you haven't picked up something.

WgaTray.exe can easily be replaced by malware. In fact, you could delete it
(I advice NOT to) and Windows will stil run normaly.
I also have WgaTray.exe on my system. At your advice I ran A-square, but a2
did not find any problem.
You probably had a WgaTray.exe that was replaced by malware (using the same
name).

Thanks for the advice and the links to some fine freewarez.

By the way, MY problem is still not solved.

I came here only because I mistakenly thought that the email I received from
Microsoft was a notification that I had a response to a post at MajorGeeks or
GeeksToGoor I wouldn't have come. Now that I did, I'm happy because it's not
me who came, spit on the floor and slammed the door . . . it was you who did
it to me behind my back, thinking I wouldn't be coming here any longer.
WgaTray.exe is Microsoft spyware. Do a search for it using find hidden and
system files and it'll come up with Microsoft's silver star, meaning, do you
have genuine Microsoft Windows in you pc? If it's determined that you do,
why does it keep in contact with Microsoft several times a day? What info is
Microsoft getting about me and my pc habits? Microsoft is a Peeping Tom and,
like all Peeping Toms, it should be removed. Just a fast Google search came
up with all negative remarks about WgaTray.exe:

If you don't care that you're being spyed upon, keep WgaTray.exe in your pc.
As for me, I deleted the file when a-sqared notified me that it was spyware.
I hadn't yet performed a scan. A-squared told me whenever WgaTray.exe
phoned home and asked me if I wanted to allow it one time, always, never or
delete it. I deleted it.

If all spyware is bad, then WgaTray.exe is bad. I don't know who you are to
advice anyone not to delete the file but you obviously don't understand that
it is spyware. When I deleted the file, the speed of my pc more than
tripled. After I deleted WgaTray.exe, I performed 8 hours worth of scans of
my pc in Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking and I had no viruses,
spyware, malware, trojans, worms, or adware in my pc. So it was only
WgaTray.exe that caused the problems with my pc.

MajorGeeks Forum: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/

Excellent programs to use to check for viruses, spyware, malware, trojans,
worms, or adware:
http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

Follow ALL the steps listed in the above url and then post the results here
for help:
http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35

If you have your Windows disk, pop the DVD into your DVD drive and Windows
will check all of your protected files to ensure that they are the original
files and not modified:

Start > Run > (type in box) sfc /scannow > ok

When the Windows installation screen opens, click EXIT.

It will not give you a report when it is done.

Re-boot the pc afterwards.

This might solve the problems that you're having with your pc.

Hopefully I won't make the same mistake by coming here, thinking it was a
MajorGeeks or GeekstoGo forum notification because it p*sses me off to no end
when someone maliciously talks behind someone else's back.

Thank you for the feedback.

It's true that Guided Help is not a diagnostic tool - we don't try to
figure which solution to attempt. Currently, we are more a solution
for easily completing a (potentially complex) task than for figuring
out what set of steps you need in the first place. Guided Help is only
a small part of the complete support solution including diagnostic
tools, product support staff, and communities like this. We're looking
at how to make these be more connected so that the needle is found for
you.

I'll bring it up in our meeting next week, too.

Thanks,

I will take your advice, for which I thank you (again).
Meanwhile I too joined MajorGeeks.
Maybe I see you there.
