Files required to use Windows Update are no
longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:

1) Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
2) Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

These are the 2 options if i chose one it download the files and register
but it still doesnt work and the same error message appear just like a loop
keeps repeating itself.

Second option just doesnt help at all.... No details given no error msg was
shown etc...

Please help someone as Windows Update are crucial and if i bring back to my
manufacturer they just ask me for permisson to reformat.... :( and telephone
support sucks...

Sincerely,
Andrew

Hi, Andrew;

First, Restart the computer. It may be that some of the files needed
were not registered pending a Restart. Give WU another try after the
Restart.

If that doesn't work, manually download and install these items:

New WinHTTP and BITS update:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b93356b1-ba43-480f-983d-eb19368f9047&displaylang=en

New MS Installer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=889482FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=en

MS scripting support files:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c717d943-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en

After the final Restart, return to the Windows Update site. Does it
function now?

If you still encounter the same problem, do the following:

On the Start/Run line enter: "net stop wuauserv"

In the .\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder delete everything EXCEPT
for the EventCache folder.

On the Start/Run line enter "services.msc" and when the list comes up
check that these three items are all set to Automatic (if not, change
them):
Automatic Updates
BITS
Event Log

Close the Services list; Restart your computer. Now go to this site and
click the button to begin the install of
the MU components:

I have the exact same problem. I tried what you posted, but the problem still
exists.

Get the same message:

" Files required to use Windows Update are no

longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:

1) Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
2) Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem"

I chose 2 above and followed the steps (like I've done before) and they
still don't help.

Help?

I'm getting this problem too...as is another computer I'm working on in my
office. Strangely, other computers in the office seem to have no problem
whatsoever. I tried Sky King's advice, but I'm still getting the same thing.

What is the version number of the muweb.dll file in your system32

Hi people i have solved my problem yesterday and since ur having the same
problem i wou
ld like to help but im unable to recall where i did it i only remember u can
try looking in the log file for the error by opening a new window and type in
this
%windir%\windowsupdate.log

then search for that error. I did 2 steps one is a regeditE something
something and another one is to open a dos window using cmd and there are a
few commands to enter. After each try close all windows and try again. Hope
your be able to find it. I also manage to solve by luck.... The manufacturers
really should wake up their idea man...

I was having the same problem trying to update a PC with W2000. After I tried
Sky Kings suggestions, restarted, and failed again, I tried other upgrades.
I was able to upgrate to IE6, and then when I restarted, and tried the W2000
upgrade again it worked.

Did you delete the SoftwareDistribtion folder? Have you done a Restart
recently?

On the Start/Run line enter: "net stop wuauserv"

In the .\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder delete everything.

On the Start/Run line enter "services.msc" and when the list comes up
check that these three items are all set to Automatic (if not, change
them):
Automatic Updates
BITS
Event Log

Close the Services list; Restart your computer. Now go to this site and
click the button to begin the install of
the MU components:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/microsoftupdate/default.mspx

Or on the WU website elect the option to use Microsoft Update.

When done, Restart the computer again. Now what do you have in the
System32 folder for that file (muweb.dll)?

1. Boot into Safe Mode with the Administrator acct.

2. On the Start/Run line type: net stop wuauserv (probably already
stopped, but check anyway)

3. Clear the Registry condition for these files by typing on the
Start/Run line:

Regsvr32 /u \system32\iuengine.dll
Regsvr32 /u \system32\mucltui.dll
Regsvr32 /u \system32\muweb.dll
Regsvr32 /u \system32\wuapi.dll
Regsvr32 /u \system32\wuaueng.dll
Regsvr32 /u \system32\wuaueng1.dll
Regsvr32 /u \system32\wucltui.dll
Regsvr32 /u \system32\wups.dll
Regsvr32 /u \system32\wups2.dll
Regsvr32 /u \system32\wuweb.dll

4. Delete these files:

.\WINDOWS\system32\iuengine.dll
.\WINDOWS\system32\mucltui.dll
.\WINDOWS\system32\muweb.dll
.\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll
.\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe
.\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt1.exe
.\WINDOWS\system32\wuaucpl.cpl
.\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll
.\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng1.dll
.\WINDOWS\system32\wucltui.dll
.\WINDOWS\system32\wups.dll
.\WINDOWS\system32\wups2.dll
.\WINDOWS\system32\wuweb.dll

Also delete the entire ".:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution" folder. You
will lose your AU/WU History, but that isn't really a bad thing.

5. Restart back into Normal mode, being sure you log into an account
that has full Administrator privileges. The WU controls should get
updated to the 5.4.3790.2180 version from the
.:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder during that restart.

6. Now go to this website:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx If you
haven't already, select the option in the right "News" section to use
Microsoft Update versus plain old Windows Update. You will get some
controls installed.

When that is done, close everything and Restart the computer. Try MU
now.

Got into safe mode. In run: net stop wuauserv, brought up the comd window for
a split second only.

I then tried the entries below on the run line, but got the following
message for all:

"LoadLibrary("\system32\iuengine.dll ")failed - The specified module could
not be found". I paid close attention to the spaces, etc...

I exited the safe mode.

Any ideas what I should do next?

That is normal when using Start/Run for this command (but the command
will do it's job anyway).

If you want to see what happens, run the net stop wuauserv command in
a command prompt instead, e.g. open it with Start/Run --> cmd.exe

You cannot use \system32\iuengine.dll

Use this instead:

Regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\iuengine.dll

I used Regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\ and all succeeded but 3:

iuengine.dll -- "...was loaded but the DLLUnregisterServer entry point was
not found. This file can not be registered."

wuapi.dll -- "...failed... 0x8002801c"

mucltui.dll -- "... module could not be found."

I then exited safe mode and restarted.

Any ideas?

Some of those listed may not have the proper headers to display the
un-registering info.

If you have done all the un-register steps, while still in Safe Mode
continue with the rest of the steps (delete files, etc.). IOW, boot
back into Safe Mode and proceed with step 4. with the prior set of steps
in the order listed.

Sky and Torgeir,

It appears to have worked! I downloaded some updates. I have my auto
update setting for download, but let me choose when to install. I'll have to
see how that works.

Thanks!! I've been trying solutions for a week or 2.

FWIW the following information is based on my XPsp2
and what DependencyWalker says about these modules.

I think it would be a mistake to use regsvr32 with this module on my OS.
If these instructions were designed for this OS I suspect that the module
intended could be iuctl.dll instead. The reason is that iuctl.dll has that
entry point (and DllRegisterServer) but iuengine.dll has neither.

This issue has been raised before but I didn't know the source
of the instructions then.

This looks like a problem which should be diagnosed further.
I suggest using DependencyWalker's Profiler to monitor the
execution of this command. OTOH it apparently may mean
that there was nothing to unregister so perhaps you could try
registering it first and then unregistering it just to be sure you
know what its state is. If the registration fails make a note
of its error code or use the above Profiler idea to get more
information about the symptom.

I'm not sure but I don't think that this module existed until
I upgraded to WUv6. Which version of WU do you use?

Hi, Robert;

The fault is mine alone. I picked all the WU/MU related files in the
System32 folder and copied them to a list.

Yep, one or two of them won't unregister using Regsvr32. I should
probably update my template to avoid this confusion. Thanks for the
info.

BTW, the OS version doesn't matter as long as folks are using Windows
Update V5/6 (or MU). ;)

Hi;

Not Robert, but...

In an earlier post you stated that WU/MU was working. Basic rule of
computers: If it isn't broke, don't fix it. <g> Since you stated
earlier that WU/MU was working, it is not a good idea to keep trying to
"fix" what already is working.

I my case the solution was as simple as:

on the Start/Run line: regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

After this both WU and MU worked again.
