Hi,

Error 0x800C0005 means:

"Cannot locate the Internet server or proxy server."

There could be many reasons for this...

Have you tried reading:

Hi Alan,

Please make sure you disable any web enhancement/accelerator programs before
accessing Windows Update.

Add the following Trusted Sites:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
3. Click "Security."
4. Click the Trusted Sites icon.
5. Click "Sites."
6. Clear the check box "Require server verification (https:)for all sites in
this zone."
7. Add all four sites
http://Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://v4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com (Note: The https is correct)
http://Download.Windowsupdate.com
https://a248.e.akamai.net

----------------------------------------------

Check your Host file and make sure you don't have any static IP entries
for the Windows Update or Akamai listed in the file.

Depending on the operating system:
The file is in:

Windows 98/ME - C:\Windows.
Windows NT/2000 - C:\Winnt\system32\drivers\etc
Windows XP - C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc

In order to view the Host file you may need to associate the Host file with
Notepad, to do so right click on the file and select "open" or "open with"
select Notepad from the list of programs. If the Host file contains a
static IP address associated with Windows Update or AKAMAI, comment the
entry by adding the # sign at the beginning of the entry or delete the
entire line
and save changes to the Hosts file.

Applications like web accelerators, Tweak Master DNS, Spyblockers, etc. can
add static IP entries for the Windows Update site into your Host file which
cause Windows Update to fail.

Thanks,
Lucy [MS]

Allan,

Lucy is correct.... The point about the "static" IP
address issue in the host file, has hit MANY users!

Nice post Lucy :-)
