a) When I try to download and reinstall the Windows Update I get the
following message (translated from Swedish):
"An irreversible error occurred during installation of the Windows Update
agent".
The it stops.
b) I cannot fetch a new version of Windows Update, since that requires
Windows Update.
Is there a way around this?
c) Your third suggestion I hesitate to try - the tone in the article scares
me a bit. I am not aware of any special settings. What consequences can this
have, provided I make everything right?

Thank you, Vista Ray
Update for hardware?
Get it from those who actually manufacture and support said hardware - in
your case - HP. Microsoft did not make the hardware you are referring to -
do not go to them or accept their offer of support for it. Go to those who
have a vested interest.
