Hello All
After locating the information below relating to my error messages I ran the
suggested solution and all was OK, ie I could access windows updaet and down
load etc. I have tried again today and the same set of errors are listed, I
have followed the solution again with no luck. F.i. I ahve alos worked
through the advice on
http://www.updatexp.com/0x800A138F.html and also
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/. I have two users on the
sytem (both with admin functions) and two possible dial up accounts (same
ISP - private and business accounts), would this have any effect? If I
access the windows update catalogue and sort by OS etc what is the best
(easiest) method to check which downloads I am missing?
Thanks for any imput
//M

I am also awaiting a definitive response. Like Mark, I worked through the
possible solutions on those web sites to no avail. Windows Update and Office
Update both stopped working on 3 different computers ( 2 Windows XP Home, 1
Windows XP Pro) simultaneously, so I doubted that it is a local problem - I
suspected a problem with WU - but all of the suggested solutions imply that
it is caused by a configuration problem on the client.

According to the Windows Update.log file, the underlying error occurs when:
"Querying software update catalog from
https://a248.e.akamai.net/v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/getmanifest.asp
(Error 0x800C0005)"
The problem must be with the akamai server.

This sounds like a possible ISP problem. You may want to contact your ISP
or test by using a temporary ISP to access the site.
If this doesn't help then I recommend creating a case for more in depth
troubleshooting and personalized support.

Thanks for the advice Lucy. As you (and I) suspected, it was likely due to
the ISP. They had added anti-virus filters to the network shortly before the
problem began. To this date, they have not responded to any of my inquiries,
but the problem has 'gone away'. I am able to use both Windows and Office
Update sites again on all computers.
