The shortcut, that had always been pinned to my start menu no longer works to
get to Windows Update. Also, in the program list it does not take you
anywhere. Does anyone have any idea why this happened and how to get a
shortcut back into the start menu? Thank you in advance.

Are you using Avant, if so the latest update to it has broken some links.
