Have Win 98, IE 5 and OE 5. Had problems with IE 6 and
uninstalled. Came to updates and checking was incomplete
due to either I did not answer yes to trust certificate
(which I did)or security wasn't right. I did everything
that KB 319585 told me to do and I still cannot get
updates. Please help ASAP!

Amy,

What's the exact error message? Some suggestions:

Upgrade to Internet Explorer 6 SP1
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp

Open Internet Explorer
Select Tools > Internet Options
Select Security Tab
Highlight "Internet" and Click "Custom Level"
Under "ActiveX controls and Plugins" Verify the following:

Download signed ActiveX controls = Prompt
Download unsigned ActiveX controls = Disabled
Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe = Disabled
Run ActiveX controls and Plugins = Enabled
Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting = Enabled

Under "Scripting" Verify the following:
Active Scripting = Enabled

Add the following Trusted Sites:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
3. Click "Security."
4. Click the Trusted Sites icon.
5. Click "Sites."
6. Clear the check box "Require server verification (https:)for all sites in
this zone."
7. Add all of the following sites.
http://Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://v4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://Download.Windowsupdate.com

Close all open browsers, then connect to the Windows Update site and see if
it works.

If not, register the following files:

Start > Run
Type "regsvr32 softpub.dll" (without quotes)
Press ok.
Should receive a succeeded message.

Repeat above steps for:
wintrust.dll
initpki.dll
mssip32.dll

Thanks,
