My Windows Defender, MSN Messenger and Windows update stopped to work a few
weeks ago. I've tried to solve this with Windows Update -page, but I'm
constantly failing with this. I keep getting this information:

Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue:
- Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
- Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

If I choose the first one it does download the update software and does 100%
of registration but keeps coming back to the same information (see above).

What can I do? My Windows is installed 6 months ago so it should be updating
still.

You may have to do this in Safe Mode... But try in normal mode first...

I'm going to give you a response that should cover most bases. It is not
mine - but it may do the trick for you...
(It covers a lot of bases.)

Reboot your computer and have nothing open before you start the steps....
Just log in and follow them, then when it has you rebooting - first thing
you should try ins visiting http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and seeing
what happens (in Internet Explorer.) Please come back and report!

Hope it's a great day, then!
Glad to have made it a bit brighter!

Thanks. This worked for me. Don't understand the issues that could cause or
why the batch file of the registry fixed the problem; but just glad it
worked. Cheers Jim R

A variation of an old MS Support command file which still propagates
some questionable syntaxes:
