I do have PPviewer installed.
All the other updates appear to have installed correctly, but this one keeps
failing, and a little while later I'm offered it again. I have tried
restarting the PC, same result.
If I click in the update history status (failed) for the update it says the
error code is 0x4397
Any ideas how to proceed?
Win XP SP2 (updated, apart from this problem).

If the answer is yes, you'll have to uninstall PPV, reinstall it, and
*retain* the original installation file.
If you don't retain the installation file then PPV will not be able to
install updates.
Also, it appears that PPV 2003 is no longer available on the MS Download
Center or via Office.Microsoft.com.
If that's the case you'll have to go with PPV 2007 -

According to this on the download page, it appears that one need not
retain the installation file for PPV 2007 so that subsequent updates
will install -

I did retain the original file and still have it.
But I'll try a complete removal of PP2003 and install PP2007 and see what
happens.
Thanks

Is the original installation file in the *same* location that it was
when PPV2K3 was installed ?
BTW, running disk and registry clean up "tools" will also remove the
local installation source info that's required to successfully install
updates to the PPV 2K3.
Not sure where it was when it was actually installed though.
Is there a way I can check this, or should I just remove it and install 2007
instead?

How to fix MSI software update registration corruption issues

I'm no PC expert and I hate 'messing' around in the registry even with a tool.
Sorry if your link is the suggested fix, but should I be able to remove
PP2003 (via add/remove) and then install PPviewer2007? It may be best to use
the latest version of the viewer anyway. Or is the removal likely to fail for
the same/similar reason?
I'm not doubting you, just checking options.
Thanks for you replies.
FWIW, uninstalling PP2VK3 and replacing it with PPV2K7 is preferrable as
PPV2K7 is more secure, it reads older file formats created in previous
Versions of PPV, and you won't have to go through this excercise in
frustration when installing updates for it.
If you retain PPV2K3 and need to view PP files that were created with
later Versions of PPV and the creator of the file did not save them in a
format that the PPV2K3 can view, then you could install the Office
Compatibility Pack to view them. But, installing the Compat Pack means
that it has to be kept updated too.
IMHO, the less "things" we have to update, the better.
IF MS is to be believed when they state that you can delete the
installation file after installing PPV2K7, then perhaps they've resolved
the update installation error which previously occurred when the
installation file was deleted or moved.
I retained the installation file of PPV2K7 due to the past behavior of
updating PPV and have not had any issues installing updates so far.
The next time there's an update for it I'll move the file to see what
happens.
And, I don't think that you're doubting me ... you're expressing
legimate concern and using your common sense here, George. Good on you !
