update (KB905474). I cannot locate the file you specified. I have hide hidden
folders and hide protected operating system files turned off. All I can find
is a security catalog named "WgaNotify" located here:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}
the unready@discussions.microsoft.com Pete the unready
installed no problems and allowed other updates .
I think the update is buggy.

both set to allowed!

After finally fixing my computer, I'm back again with the above
described problem on my wife's computer. To add to the above, Event
Viewer on her computer lists a source crypt32 error event ID 8 with
the message:
"Failed auto update retrieval of third-party root list

I am experiencing the identical behavior with the latest Genuine Validation
update, both on my personal machine and on three customers' machines. All
are running Windows XP SP2 with all prior updates (required and optional).
All receive error 0x80242006 and leave the downloaded file marked for later
installation.
I enclose my WgaNotify.log file at the BOTTOM of this post; let's hope MS
notices the issue and fixes it.

FWIW my "first link" is a link to thread in the WGA web forum where an
MS employe states, that they have released (or are trying to) a new
version of KB905474 - the one that's linked to directly in the link
above.

A manual installation simply avoids the problem instead of fixing it.
If there is a problem with Windows Update or a computer when
downloading updates, I would much rather see the problem fixed.
Otherwise, it will likely return at some future date - perhaps with
even worse consequences.
Nobody addressed my other message describing an error message in Event
Viewer ... source crypt32 error event ID 8 with the message:
"Failed auto update retrieval of third-party root list
sequence number from: <http://www.download.
windowsupdate.com/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/
authrootseq.txt> with error: specified server
cannot perform the requested operation."
Are others seeing this error message and what does it mean?

Just downloaded and ran the exe file you indicated, worked like a charm,
but, did not update the 'history' files, still shows as a 'failed' on the
list.

That's correct. The list shows only updates done via Windows Update or Auto
Update. Not to worry.

I used the suggested download above, and it worked like a charm. Now things
are back to normal and my copy of Windows XP Pro is now recognnized as
genuine, which it obvously is. Thanks for the lead to use the manual
download of the newest version.

If the error code is as quoted above 80242006, then download and install:

Possibly a firewall is obstructing the correct operation of Windows.
Disable all firewalls which obstruct outgoing connections and try again. The
Windows Firewall will not cause this problem, but third-party firewalls
might.
