update not working for XP SP2, 80096010 and 8024400A

About 3 weeks ago I got a new computer - custom built Quad core 2.83 Ghz, 4
gigs ram, dual GTX 260 Nvidia 896 ram video card, dual 250-gig SATA HDDs and
an 750i SLI motherboard. It came with Vista.

I had to install and re-install Vista about 6-7 times that first week
before it would work properly with RAID and such. But I did get it working -
well, mostly; I couldn't play music in the webcam chat rooms I go into - but,
in general, I didn't like Vista, preferring XP.

So i bought a full XP CD with SP2 on it from ebay - full retail version,
not OEM, eductional, etc., never registered, etc. When I installed it, the
install went fine; but it wouldn't update on Windows Update
(wouldn't/couldn't get the updated update manager; couldn't get anything -
websites, programs, etc - that required ActiveX, and couldn't download
anything (no matter what website), as it would always tell me (after it
downloaded) that it couldn't run the file it was corrupt.

So then I went back to Vista, figuring maybe I got a bad copy of XP off
ebay; the guy I bought it from swears it's a legit copy, and after checking
Microsoft's site on how to tell if it's legit, it seems legit. Anyhow, once
I installed Vista, I had the same 3 problems: cannot update it (no security
addons, no update manager, nothing), cannot run anything (including
Microsoft's troubleshooter online) that requires ActiveX, and cannot run
anything I download without getting the "cannot run *** file is corrupt"
error.

So I went back to XP, figuring that if I'm going to evntually get it
fixed, I'd rather have XP fixed. And yes, still the same 3 problems. I get
various error codes - usually the 80096010 (which I cannot find anywhere on
what it is or how to fix it) or the 8024400A error.

I went through the forums on here, and had a little luck fixing some of
the errors I've been getting, but still get stuck - error after error after
error. I've checked the certificates, and the settings seem fine to me.

I've never had this problem before, nor do I know anyone that has (never
heard of it before). I emailed Microsoft, and am waiting for a response.
but I thought maybe there's someone on here who has come across this before,
and knows how to solve it. I'm thinking maybe there's something in the BIOS,
maybe (is there a setting in there that could potentially cause this?)? Or
the RAM (it tells me now that I have 2.8 ghz available, even though I have 4
installed)? Or something to do with Internet Explorer (running v6 now,
cannot get an updated one)? I can access both HDDs fine; my system seems to
run fine otherwise - doesn't crash, etc, no problems except these three (that
I know of yet), I can surf the web (unless ActiveX is needed), use my webcam
fine, run games/programs I install from CD fine. I can't help but think
these 3 problems are related to each other.

In Sum: I cannot run Windows update (cannot get the updated Update
Manager, let alone any actual updates).
I cannot run/view/use anything on the web that requires ActiveX
controls - I right click the pop-down bar, choose install, and it does
nothing. At all.
And anything that I download will not run, with it giving me a "file
corrupted" error.

Help!!!! ???

My laptop isn't available to use Windows/Microsoft Update, either, but my
desktop can. I believe it's because of a virus I've gotten on my laptop.
Fortunately, McAffee and Spybot: Search & Destroy have kept the virus at bay,
but I can't get rid of it. I've scanned my entire computer several times and
can't seem to find it. I went into Safe Mode to scan twice, finding, and
removing, the virus one of those two times, but it just came back. The reason
I've got a virus on my laptop and not my desktop is because I don't surf the
web on my desktop. I've never been unable to use Windows/Microsoft Update up
until this point, so I believe this virus is associated with it. I hope this

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, when did you
install it, and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Hello Mugwumpf,

I've the same problem. I'm still searching the whole internet, but still
haven't fund any solution.

I installed 5 times windows vista ultimate, installed all the drivers and
when I try to run Microsoft update, I'm getting the error 80096010.
Also when I downloaded other software from internet (skype) I got the
message "file is corrupt".

If you have any solution, please let me know. Otherwise around as well.

I to are having same problem cant get updates, cant download (file
corrupted) cant install.... im soooo stuck. has anyone got a solution
please?? my laptop not working properly at all. I need help bad and it sounds
like so many other people are having same problem too. how do we fix this??

See - You cannot install some updates or programs

First, see if the Cryptographic service is disabled.
Click the Start orb > in the 'Start Search' field type in
services
Click on Services, enter the password or click Continue at the User
Account Control prompt to allow the Services console to open.
Double left click on Cryptographic Services
The Startup type should be showing as Automatic
If it's not, set it to that.
Close the Services console

Now do Method 1 and 3 as shown in the KB article.
If no joy, then go on to Method 4.
If none of the Methods resolves the issue, suggest you then try
to reset Windows Updates components:

Download the Fixit, MicrosoftFixit50202.msi, by click the Fixit button
and choosing to Save it, rather than Run it.
When the download completes close *all* open programs and browsers.
Now run MicrosoftFixit50202.msi and choose it's Aggressive option.
The system must be connected to the internet so it can download and
install the Windows Update Agent.
Restart after it completes it's operation and see if the system can
update now.
