For weeks I have been trying to get rid of this install failure message,
error code 0x537. Can't seem to find the solution...

This is Office 2003 on XP Media Center v2002 SP2.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Uwe

Have your Office 2003 media (CD) in the system when you try to install?
Tried getting the stand-alone installer?

Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=85AF7BFD-6F69-4289-8BD1-EB966BCDFB5E&displaylang=en

Released way back on 3/30/2004. What I suggest is that you download from
the above link the "OfficeXpSp3-kb832671-fullfile-enu.exe" file and save it
to your desktop. (57.5MB - not 16MB!) Try running it.

(It states, on that page, "OfficeXpSp3-kb832671-fullfile-enu.exe: Download
this file if you do not have access to your installation source...")

Well thanks Shenan,

after d/l'ing the 54MB worth of OfficeXP sp file, it told me -of course-
that I have Office 2003 installed, not XP. In other words, does anyone have a
fix for my update misery? But please read my post before responding.

Thanks.

I read it - I pasted the wrong link. I even referred to it (Office 2003) in
my original response initially.

My apologies - but you did not have to respond in an ingratiated manner and
you could have, I assume, looked up the correct link and/or read the text
above and after the incorrect link before downloading to have seen I had
accidentally pasted the wrong reference and put an Office XP link instead?

Here is the correct link (found by visiting http://office.microsoft.com/ and
going through the downloads for Office 2003.):

Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=E25B7049-3E13-433B-B9D2-5E3C1132F206&displaylang=en

It will be available on CD soon, I am sure...

If you still have trouble installing it, you may wish to review:

You also may wish to look at:

Hope you get it sorted out.

Alright Shenan, I know you are just trying to help, I appreciate it. I just
don't have enough of a span for this, since I burned a few hours on this
already. And yes, I had downloaded the full 116MB worth of Office 2003 SP3
patch before, in fact a few times, to make sure I had a good download. I have
also spent time on the ref kb article, twiddling registry settings etc. It
just doesn't want to install. no matter what I try. Also looks like I am the
only one on this globe with that specific error code, can't find any
references to this one anywhere.

Thanks,

Uwe

I finally bit the dust and uninstalled Office 2003, rebooted, and reinstalled
the initial (sp-free) version, effectively wiping out SP2.

Then I tried to run SP3 off that 117MB (sorry, not 116 :-) ) download, and
voila, it comes up with an error 1335 (PCW_CAB_H15000_1 is corrupt or cannot
be used). Interestingly enough 1335 equals 0x537, so the originally attempted
upgrade through Windows Update knew all along that this specific file has a
problem, except that Windows Update elected to leave me in the dark about
this.

Anyway, now I am scanning my hard disk for this PCW_... file and it can not
be found anywhere, so I don't know if it's SP3 exe payload or it's supposed
to be in a cab file on the install CD (of which I have tried two different
media). Does anyone have a clue what this PCW_... file is and where it's
coming from?

Thanks again!

I had this exact same problem. Believe it or not, you can install Office
2003 SP3 by installing Office 2003 SP2 first! My specific errors were prior
to the installation of SP2 were:

PCW_CAB_H15000_1 is corrupt or cannot be used

error 1335

I think my install log had a 1603 error as well. Sorry I didn't take notes.
BUT I suggest you do this before any of the more involved and complicated
methods of troubleshooting. I f I had done this at first, I would have saved
a good 9 hours of my life that I am not getting back!

Do you have any idea what the word you used -- "ingratiated" -- means?
Apparently not. You used it exactly the opposite of the way I think you
wanted to. Plase check "ww.dictionary.com" before using words of more than
one syllable.

"Sarcasm", feel free to take your own advice and look that one up.

What is it with people digging up posts over 12 months old and replying to
them with nothing useful to add? What exactly does this accomplish? Is it
a hope that since the post is likely no longer monitored, they can post
whatever they desire without consequences or is it they just conveniently
miss the age of the conversation they are responding to?

You have to give them credit though... It takes effort and much free time to
read really old newsgroup postings and then choose to respond to them
without much reason other than self-serving antagonistic desire.

Well - no you don't - but seemingly that gives them purpose. A goal is a
goal. I guess everyone needs a hobby.

FINALLY!

After a year of being bugged by this, the fix (found through many, many
hours of trial and error) is easy. Just delete the %temp%\OHotfix folder
content just prior to Office 2003 SP3 update, and all worked well
immediately. Now I am wondering why not a single MS-MVP ever stumbled across
this, or cared to share, whichever it may be.

With that I can finally kiss Good Bye to the extremely nagging hint that an
update is available, through Windows Update, and through OneCare. I'll sleep
better now, too.

None of these suggestions worked for me. It Office 2003 is still a supported
application and Microsoft has no fix is there a way to simply get my money
back for the cost of Office 2003?

No. You will not get your money back for Office 2003 since it has been in the
mainstream now for years.

But try the following.

Never but never use any Registry Cleaning tools

See the following

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e670ad22-d3c1-41f7-ba30-6a67139feaa3&DisplayLang=en

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e9f8e309-d721-4bab-b485-5eede8d49eb8&DisplayLang=en

Also see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903776

Also you can try and do the following if the above does not correct it. Do not jump
to this step before trying the of the above

1st Rename Office subkeys

Note: Removing the following registry keys may reset customized user
settings for your Microsoft Office programs.

1. Close all the applications.
2. Click on Start->Run, type in REGEDIT and click on OK.
3. Locate and select the following registry subkeys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0

4. Right click on 11.0 and rename them to Old11.
5. Close the Registry Editor.

2nd. Detect and Repair Office 2003

1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Click Change/Remove Programs on the left pane.
4. Highlight Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 on the right pane
and click Change.
5. Insert the correct version of CD when it requires.
6. Select “Reinstall and Repair” and click Next.
7. Select “Detect and Repair errors in my Office installation”.
8. Click Install and wait the process to end.

3rd. Install the Updates

No. Office 2003 is not broken in this case - your system is. ;-) If it was
Office 2003 - no one would be able to install SP3 in the same way you seem
to be unable to. That would be a problem on a mass scale and likely would
not exist long or your query would have a 'sure - you can get your money
back because they cannot fix it.' answer. ;-)

The product likely works fine if you uninstall it and integrate SP3 into the
original installation media (making a new installation media set) and
install it using that.

There's also likely some way you could fix your system to allow SP3 for
Office 2003 to install onto it.

You tried the solution Uwe posted?
