During installation I received the error "The file
C:\Windows\AppPatch\drvmain.sdb is open or in use by another application."
I've tried stopping all non-Microsoft services using System Configuration
Utility (msconfig) but no luck. Any suggestions out there?

Perform a "clean boot", then proceed to install SP2.

What do you think about installing in Safe Mode :?)
Clean Boot failed. I also tried clearing "Load System Services" with "Auto
Updates" and "Cryptographic Services" checked but still failed under
drvmain.sdb. There are a few other people out there with the same problem
but I haven't read a good resolve (someone claimed uninstalling SP1 worked.)
Any other pointers?

What I wound up doing was a "Diagnostic Boot" with "Automatic Updates" and
"Cryptographic Services" enabled. I opened Explorer into the directory for
drvmain.sdb, made a copy of the file and then deleted it. The file was
automatically rewritten so I opened "task manager" into Processes and saw a
couple of instances of svchost.exe running, took a gamble and ended the
first process then deleted drvmain.sdb. The file remained deleted without
being rewritten so I rebooted and checked the directory again for the file
and it was still deleted; SP2 then was able to complete the install. I then
copied drvmain.sdb back into the directory, set things back for a "Normal
Boot" and things seem fine so far :)

Using a program called File Monitor from www.sysinternals.com I found out
that what is keeping the file drvmain.sdb open is svchost.exe, actually
all of them, it seems =/

received the same message drvmain.sdb is open.

Solution is simple.
Go to networkconnections and disconnect all connections except LAN
before installing sp3.
After you reboot reconnect networkconnections.
