I tried to install the the suggested file, but it told me that the service
pack but it said: 'the service pack version of this system is newer than the
update you are applying. there is no need to install this update.'

I currently have sp2 on my system. any other ideas as to how i might be able
to get my updates working. nothing on the updates page will work, such as the
installation history or the updates. any help would be appreciated.

Hi

OK, error 0x80070424 indicates that the BITS service does not
exist (or is messed up).

This command line should reinstall the BITS service, run it e.g.
from Start/Run (line will wrap in the newsreader!):

%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall
132 %SystemRoot%\inf\qmgr.inf

If it asks for your OS/SP CD-ROM to get some files, just point it to the
folder C:\Windows\System32 (or wherever WinXP is installed to)

If it still doesn't work, reinstall the AutoUpdate service as well:

This command line should reinstall the AutoUpdate service, run it e.g.
from Start/Run (line will wrap in the newsreader!):

%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall
132 %SystemRoot%\inf\au.inf

Please post any result back here, good or bad :-)

Hi

Check if the "Automatic Updates" and the BITS service are enabled
and are possible to start.

Start/Run --> services.msc

Then find "Automatic Updates" in the list, and double click on it.

Change Startup type Automatic if it is not, and press Apply.

If the service status is "Stopped", press the Start button.

Do the same for the service "Background Intelligent Transfer Service".

Hi, I am having the same problem.

When I check the services, Automatic updates was there, but it was disabled
and wouldn't allow me to re-enable it. When I rebooted the service is now
deleted. How do I get it back?

Having same problem; have downloaded and installed BITS service and confirmed
that is enabled and started; Automatic Updates are turned on in Control
Panel, but do not show up in Services. Tried running command lines that you
suggested, but got "installation error" messages. HELP !!!

I had the same problem and found the solution.
The Automatic Update service was gone!
So, I reinstalled it from the Run-box with the following:
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Then I started the service and relauched the automatic update site and
everything went well.

Torgeir,

Have you tried this, e.g. without the /s switches?
I tried to point out these last three entries previously,
being curious and dubious about the syntax.
Do you understand what is being attempted with that syntax?
My guess would be that the /s switch would be just obscuring
any errors and none of those modules would be reinitialized at all.

E.g. I could understand this syntax for the last ones:

regsvr32 /n /i:SspcCreateSspiReg msnsspc.dll /s
regsvr32 /n /i:SspcCreateSspiReg msapsspc.dll /s

but I haven't a clue what would be intended by the first.
My best guess would be that it should be two commands
both of which are corrupted by being mixed in one line.
E.g. a normal re-initialization of scrrun.dll and a line
which is given in KB279830 and is some obscure maintenance
tool for a one-time conversion of "jobs" started by the Task Scheduler?

Hi

Try the steps in this post and see if it helps:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=Osk%232oqmEHA.4068%40tk2msftngp13.phx.gbl

Anyway, I suggest you use the full SP2 installer instead of
Windows Update to install SP2.

SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center
(standalone "network" version, 266 MB):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a

(disregard the "intended for IT professionals and developers" part,
it can be used on a single computer as well)

If you do not have broadband at home, but you have at work or you have
friends that have it, you can download it there and burn it to a CD.

If you think that the download is to large, you can get the same
file on a CD from Microsoft.

The Windows XP SP2 CD order point:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

To reset the pending download you now have, clean out the Download
folder (WU5's temporary download folder) located here:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You can use the procedure described here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v5consumer/showarticle.aspx?articleid=11&ln=en

You might need to delete the DataStore folder mentioned in the link
above, as well as the EventCache folder.

Note that a side effect of deleting the DataStore folder is that you
lose your WU v5 History listing (not critical).

For folders you can consider deleting and other disk cleanup tips
after a successful SP2 installation, take a look here:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=%2368Pw4rlEHA.3712%40TK2MSFTNGP15.phx.gbl

Before installing SP2, you should take a look at the
following sites:

What to Know Before You Download and Install Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

How to successfully install Windows XP Service Pack 2.
http://www.fixyourwindows.com/winxpsp2install.htm

Service Pack Installation Checklist
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

Please take a look at this Microsoft knowledge base article as well:

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not available to install from Windows
Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=885627

*Important* part from the link above:

If you have T.V. Media from Total Velocity Corporation installed, or
your processor is a Intel P4 Prescott with C-0 stepping, you should
not install SP2.

Intel P4 Prescott processors came out February 2004, so if your
computer is older than that, this is not an issue for you. Also, if
you have a Dell, IBM or HP, this is not an issue.

If you suspect/know you have an Intel P4 Prescott processor, take a
look at the two following Web sites for what you need to do/have to
be able to install SP2 on the computer:

http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=7447
http://cquirke.mvps.org/sp2intel.htm

Newsflash:

Microsoft have now released a fix for the problem where SP2 fails to
boot after installing it in a PC with the Prescott or a Celeron D CPU
(or fails to install in the case of slipstreamed cds). The problem is
described here:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=34535

and the download for the fix is available here (install it before you
install SP2):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9b99c199-5d75-454f-ae07-b620727be8d8&DisplayLang=en

Also, if you have a Dell Dell Inspiron 1150 or 2650, you might get a
slow running system after installing SP2, take a look at this thread
for more on this:

i had this error back in october and discovered that it was part of a virus
of the BOXED family. i downloaded the free anti-virus software called Antivir
Guard. the updated version of this program did the trick for me. look up the
virus and you'll understand what it does. therfore you'll be better able to
deal with it.
