EVERY TIME I try Windows Update this "tool" is REQUIRED. I say "Download and
Install", it says "FAILED!". This happens EVERY TIME!

Would an MVP PLEASE help... This is my second "plead" and I've endured this
failure for over a month with NO resolution..

Thanks (in hopes...)

Did you disable your anti virus' auto scan before attempting to install WGA?

Some virus scanners can't be disabled that easy.
If you virus protection has a script protection-turn that off.
Then update.
Reboot
Turn it back on

I'm using Norton at home and in the office - NIS2005 package at home and
Symantec AntiVirus at the office. The office has is installed OK with
XP-Pro, it's just my home PC that's failing. Is this anti-virus s/w likely
to block the install? I also have MS Anti-Spyware beta running - I'm hoping
the MS chaps haven't been a bit silly and blocked their own install!

Thanks to both you and "alias" for responding so quickly...

Thank you for posting the alternative solution. I finally know why this
update fails to install. The Windows 2000 OS is not supported. The question
now is...if MS is scanning my computer to check for updates, why would it
offer software that is not supported by my OS?

Hmmmmmmmmmm

I tried the alt site and no go (neither the ActiveX control nor the IE info
bar display). I have tabletPC. I've disabled all AV and firewall. I've set
INet security options as low as I could. Neither the validate now nor the
alternative method (opens window with a " Genuine Windows hypertext
Application" title) works. I always get an ActieX error. Any other thoughts??

Thanks in advance

Read the blog under "problems with latest IE update". I had the same issue
and resolved it. Make sure you disable the Auto-updater before you remove
the update or it will just reinstall when you restart the computer. The
"Evil Update" as I now call it is (KB896688). To remove it, find it in the
"Remove and Add Programs " section of the Control Panel (make sure you check
the box to see updates". This seems to be the root of all evil update.

Jusaa,

Thanks for the info. Tried what you suggested. Removed 896688, restated the
PC and still nothing. I still fail on all validation attempts with an ActiveX
failure. Anything else you can think of?

Any MVP's with a solution out there? Or am I just destined to never again
get updates to Windows unless I pay MS for tech support???

Thanks in advance

Hey there folks. I just posted a comment on a work-around for this..It worked
for me on several systems, I see no reason why it should not work for you.

When validation fails, you may need to disable firewall and anti-virus and
reset web settings to defaults in IE. I am not positive those steps help or
not, they were just things I also did. With IE open, go to tools/manage
add-ons and disable the WGA plug-in. Refresh or restart IE and go to the
updates site. You will get a message balloon on the disabled plug-in, ignore
it. Get your updates and then relaunch IE and re-enable the plug-in. Go to
the updates site and check for updates, you will be prompted for validation
and it will pass.

Hope this helps.

Correction: Tools/PROGRAMS/Manage add-ons, for now anyway.

Hi my name is Bob hill. I think this is some kind of stupid joke if you
right click on the properties it's really nothing. Just a stupid joke the
internet is running . And I ignor it from now on. If they don't mind it
sitting there like junk. Than I don't either. I still get automatic updates
but this KB892130 tool is junk to me. Sincerly yours . I feel sorry for us
all. Bob

Sorry to dig this thread up again, but if your computer is assigned to a
domain, and you log on locally as an admin, I had the same problems. When I
removed the compter from the domain to a local workgroup, I had no issues.

Well, this all seems to have halted in mid-october and I have the same
problem as you in mid-november.
I use Zone Alarm security suite and have turned off AV and anti-spyware and
still fail on download.

I would welcome response from anyone.

There has been a new version of KB892130 released on November 15th.
http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/windowsxp-kb892130-enu-x86_eebc1bd82ff4bc7b8eb46773704ffd5f8eef14aa.exe

Disable that bunch of brainless applications *completely* or even
uninstall that one at least temporary and enable Windows Firewall
instead.

This worked for me too! My Windows Update no longer tries to download
the "genuine advantage" update, then fails, over and over again. This
link resolved it. Thanks yc!! FYI to all, the actual button to
validate your version of Windows is here -->
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/

I haven't used this computer for a few months and am just bringing it
back to life with a bunch of updates, and have removed bad programs
like Zone Alarm and other hogs. Maybe that has something to do with
the problem. Most users probably are asked to validate their version
before downloading & installing the other 9 updates I just got
through?... That is my guess.

Firstly I gone with Firefox and downloaded this file but it didn't work.
After that I tried with IE and it worked out. So, don't downloaded it
locally. Install with IE from the site.

I just use MBSA to get updates.

Too bad though that Live OneCare keeps reminding me that I need to download
critical updates when in fact 'Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool
(KB892130)' isn't critical at all.

You only need to install KB892130 if you update via Windows Update website.

None of those worked for me.
Solved! What I did was to search in Windows for anything named "892130"
I found the files in:
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\a49d784415582d2f98c84ceb0a75d898\update
I then right clicked the inf file and hit install.
Then I executed the update.exe file and rebooted.
Voila (That's pronounced Voweelah here in the south)
Upon rebooting update site did it's thing very well.
Hope this helps folks.

It should be noted that the website has changed ... as of April 1,
2010, navigate to the following page for online validation:

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate/ValidateNow.aspx

This should work for most issues of this type.
