What does Control Panel | Security Center have to say about the status of
Automatic Updates, Max? How about the status for anti-virus and firewall?

Does C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log say that updates are being downloaded and
installed OK?

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

In Start, Control Panel, Automatic Updates uncheck Automatic and check
"Notify me but don't automatically download or install". When notified
commence the process by selecting Start, Help and Support, Keep your
computer up-to-date with Windows Update and opt for a Custom install.
You will get a pop up but are not forced to respond.

Hope this helps.

Windowsupdate.log does say the updates download ok and thjey are installed
uopn shutdown. Security center of course says "check settings" as it always
does if Automatic updates are set to anything else than "automatic"

So essentially the updates do dowload and install fine it's only the yellow
tray icon that notifies you that updates are ready to be installed/dowloaded
(depending on setting) thay I can no longer get to appear. As I said, I saw
the updates today in the "turn off" dialog.

I have Norton Internet Security 2008 installed. Uninstalling that and even
running the norton removal tool changed nothing.

All other tray icons work fine, only the windwos update tray I con that I
can no longer get to appear and I hope there is another solution short of
reinstalling XP from scratch.

I've done some searching of prior newsgroup posts about this problem. What
follows is based on those search results.

1. Norton Internet Security has been the cause of this for others but since
you've uninstalled NIS 2008 and ran the removal tool, I suppose we can rule
it out.

[However, if you upgraded to NIS 2008 w/out first having uninstalled any
previous versions of any Norton applications *and* running the removal tool,
perhaps not. If such is the case, a Repair Install may be your only fix.]

2. If you disable (turn off) Automatic Updates (AU), reboot, and then
re-enable AU, does the behavior persist?

3. If you update manually [i.e., go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com |
Select CUSTOM and scan | Select and install any critical updates offered],
does the AU icon appear in Notification Area?

NB: I would NOT recommmend installing IE7 via Windows Update, if it's not
already installed!

4. See if any of the fixes on Ramesh's page help:

PA Bear -- Just as an FYI, I have the same problem but use Zone Alarm,
not Norton. I'll try disabling auto updates, rebooting and then turning
them back on to my current setting (download but let me choose when to
install). Of course, I'll have to wait until the next patch comes along
to see if it works.

The maddening thing about this problem is I always want to check to see
what the updates are before I install them (very rarely, I choose not to
install). I can't do this if I'm only notified that the updates have
downloaded when I shut down my computer.

If you are going to comment on obsolete posts without quoting from them
could you at least post a usable URL instead?

BTW you can find out what updates you are going to be installing
by looking at the ReportingEvents.log
