WMSR tool hangs at 40% after last Update

Got error installing the Windows Malicious Software Removal tool, and at
some point lost my internet connection (ISP problem), not sure if related.
Windows Updater tells me that the WMSR tool didnt install (2 of 2)
but the patch (1 of 2) did.
Have rebooted many times, manually run WMSR several times both from .exe and
directly from web browser. Everytime I get one pass of progress indicator
then 40% of a second pass. CPU goes 100% and no disk activity. Task Man shows
MRT.exe grabbing 97% CPU. Have to kill it or cancel.
The log at %windir%\debug\mrt.log has incomplete entries.

To further confuse, I ran McAfee virus scan and it hangs, when reading
wsusscan.cab !!

also tried the manual download and running from the command line mrt.exe -
none of those work. I am using Zone Alarm firewall and McAfee virus scan. I
disabled them but still no luck.
Interestingly, I ran the tool from the IE interface (link below) and it
worked. http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx
Looks like this might be a common problem based on some of the other posts.
Has anyone figured out how to fix it?
