Installation via Microsoft Update also failed. No error code was shown but
the following did show:
The following update was not installed:
Definition Update for Windows Defender – KB 915597 (Definition 1.18.2621.7).
Can someone help?

I followed your advice and on the fifth try I was successful. Like you I
had not change anything
Thanks
If you should have further problems, then try downloading the updated
definitions files directly from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/ADL.aspx
This address always has the latest definition file...well, as much as
MS can be trusted to always have anything.
The address was originally published on the msfn.org forum pages:
http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t68472.html
I hope this helps.

But then I asked Windows Update to check for available updates, and it
still insisted this was an outstanding update. It cites the exact
version number that the web page said it was giving me.
So I looked at the msfn.org page shown below, where someone said you had
to stop the service, do the update, and restart.
When I went into Services, I found that Windows Defender was listed as
start type "Automatic," but was not started. So I tried to start it, and
got "Error 0x80070003: The system cannot find the path specified."
Anybody have a clue what is going on here?
System: Vista Business, on a Lenovo laptop. I am also running Symantec's
Norton security thingy, which I suspect may be an issue.

1. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key, uninstall all
Norton software (including LiveUpdate) via Add/Remove Programs.
2. Enable the Windows Firewall.
NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) except #XX below until your anti-virus
application has been installed and fully updated!
3. Run this removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
4. Reboot and /immediately/ install Avira AntiVir* (free), or the 30-day
free trial version of, e.g., NOD32**, KAV7***
5. Manually update your new anti-virus application then run a full system
scan.
Do your problems persist now?
[Don't forget to subscribe to your new AV app or uninstall it then reinstall
the Norton application before the free-trial period expires! Should you
decide to reinstall the Norton application, I recommend not installing any
Norton Add-ons for a while.]

This has been happening for several months now on every definition
update and I am unable to find any reason for this behaviour. I do not
allow the updates to automatically install as I like to know what is
being installed on my machine and possibly this problem might not be
noticed on a machine where the updates are automatically installed.
Has anybody an explanation as to why this is happening to just these
updates?

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition SP3 and this behaviour also arose
with SP2 previously. The manual update from the URL you gave did not
cause any problem so I gather it must be something connected with the
Windows auto-update. Also updating from the Windows Defender program
completes with no problem.
It doesn't cause any real problem because the updates always install,
but each time it happens twice with two notifications that there is an
update, and I am just curious! All other Windows updates install
successfully with just the one notification.
Microsoft has established separate newsgroups for Windows Defender support
and comments. If problems persist, I'd recommend posting about it in a new
thread in the appropriate Defender newsgroup for best assistance.
See:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/newsgroups/default.mspx
TIP: Access these newsgroups using your default newsreader, not your
browser. See instructions on above page.
NB: The Defender newsgroups will not be accessible via the techarena forums
web-interface you're using to post here.
