This update fails to download. Other updates available at same time
downloaded and installed without problem.

IE 7 in XP SP2 ?
Locate both jscript.dll and vbscript.dll located in

WINDOWS\system32

*Right* click them and choose Properties, then click the Version tab
Please post back with the Version levels of the .dll files

If the files are not visible to some Users, see:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp

Installing Windows Script 5.7 for XP mitigates the need to install
KB944338 as it replaces WS 5.6 which contains the vulnerable .dlls

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=47809025-d896-482e-a0d6-524e7e844d81&DisplayLang=en

NOTE: IF IE7 installed properly in XP SP2, then jscript.dll and
vbscript.dll should already have been at Version level 5.7.
If that's the case and the update was offered, then there's a detection
error, not a system error.

IF IE7 did *not* install properly and/or jscript and vbscript.dll
reverted back to *below* Version level 5.6.0.8835 somehow, than the
system is vulnerable and either needs WS 5.7 or update KB944338
installed.

This happens when some of the components installed by IE7 have been downgraded.
It isn't yet known what causes that to happen.

At present, it looks like the recommended workaround for this problem is to
install Windows Script 5.7:

<http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=47809025-d896-482e-a0d6-524e7e844d81&DisplayLang=en>

Once Windows Script 5.7 is installed, you don't need MS08-022, and Windows
Update should recognise this and stop offering it.

Alternately, you could reinstall Internet Explorer 7, which also appears to
resolve the problem.

Harry.

I downloaded Windows Script 5.7 and that did the trick. How do you remove the
failed history of the problem? I hate to see past history of failed downloads?

Never mind...the search for "failed update history removal" brought up the
fix. Thanks. this site is cool.

Don't worry about it, it's only a report of failed updates. As long as
KB944338's no longer offered, you're good to go.
