People are supposed to make a restore point or to backup, if they did not
they should do it next time..
Microsoft is not monitoring this news group.
Put your original cd in the drive an boot from it it and make a repait.

Here's what I did.
1) Boot from the Vista install disc (I understand the following works
as an alternative if you haven't got a
Vista disc 'Windows Vista Recovery Disc Download — The NeoSmart
Files'
2) Choose your language, time etc and select the "Repair your computer"
option.
3) Start a command prompt and delete/move the following file.
C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml
In my case I moved it out the way onto my 'D:\' drive incase I ever
needed it again.
4) Restart the PC, you'll get the same 'configuring updates' screen but
after a while it will carry onto the desktop!!!
5) Turn off automatic updates and create a restore point. Wait until
MS
fixes the update.
Everything appears to be working normally now and I can reboot,
shutdown etc without getting the dreaded updates installing. Hope this
helps someone!

Why do you not have RPs? Does your version of Windows not provide
them or did you turn it off for your C:\? And, do you manually
set an RP before making any system changes yourself, no matter
how innocent they may seem? Short of having a RP, which you
obviously do not, do you have a Windows Backup of your system, or
better a good disk imager such as Acronis True Image or Norton
Ghost? Absent those simple precaution, you may have to do the
Bill Gates nuke-and-re-install shuffle.
Please clarify, perhaps, somebody can help, but nobody from MS
monitors this NG that I'm aware of, so perhaps you may want to
call or E-mail them and :cc Bill.

When u boot into XP on a dual boot setup it deletes the vista restore points
and the solutions to this causes further problems.
If i had access to these posts at work before i booted into xp to look for
solutions I could have used the repair then restore option but it was too
late for me when I found out the first get around solution.
PS Thanks to BDStone for the rant that eventually lead to the solution -
hopefully you had just read my post - which was a bit confusing ...
It ultimately led me to the solution though via yourself so ......
Everyone get to nugat's short post and log back into vista ...
This vista crash should be on the news ....
