I receive notice that I have updates to install. When I click on the icon
in the taskbar the next screen is the Windows Update. The important update
is Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1. This update has failed to
install every day since 11/12/2009 and numerous other times since the first
attempt on 3/16/2009. Most of these failures do not show any error message.
Other updates seem to install okay, the only problem I have is with
Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1.

I have Microsoft. NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 installed and I wonder if
the 3.5 is a more recent update meaning that I do not need the 1.1 any longer
and this is why it will not install.

Did you try uninstalling .NET Framework 1.1, then reinstalling? Some
programs still do need the .NET Framework 1.1 in order to work, even though
you have later versions of .NET Framework installed. If you have any
problems uninstalling .NET Framework 1.1, you can use the .NET Framework
Cleanup Tool available for download from softpedia here:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/NET-Framework-Cleanup-Tool.shtml

Hope that helps get you started toward a fix! Good Luck! :)

As a Caveat to my previous post, permit me to quote from this blog post
(from Aaron Stebner's WebLog):
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspx

----------------------- Quote -----------------------
There are a couple of very important caveats that you should read before
using this tool to cleanup .NET Framework bits on your machine:

1. This tool is designed as a last resort for cases where install, uninstall
or repair did not succeed for unusual reasons. It is not intended as a
substitute for the standard uninstall procedure. You should try to perform
an uninstall from Add/Remove Programs before using this cleanup tool.
2.This cleanup tool will delete shared files and registry keys used by other
versions of the .NET Framework. If you run the cleanup tool, you will need
to perform a repair or reinstall for all other versions of the .NET
Framework that are on your computer to get them to work correctly
afterwards.

I have been using this tool for a while, and it has proven reliable, but
there may still be bugs in it in certain scenarios. Please contact me if
you run into any issues while using the cleanup tool or if you are still
unable to install the .NET Framework (or any service packs or hotfixes)
after running it.
