This has occurred since I removed Internet Explorer 8 and went back to 7.
Explorer 8 had too many bugs and issues

IE8 is OK, the bugs and issues are in your system.
So now I want to re-install XP SP3.
In short, I have the exact problem as the original poster. I ran the
diagnostics which told me I had genuine Windows OS and everything was
configured properly. Yet I still am in the endless loop of trying to install
the Update ActiveX control. I tell it to install, and the dreaded yellow bar
just keeps coming back. If anyone has any other ideas, please chime in!
The extra money for a Mac is starting to look like a very good deal.
