to
Windows Vista SP1.

Windows Update is able to install most updates fine, but there are two
items that will not install properly. At first (couple of months ago)
there was just one, now there is another. These are:

Security Update for Windows Vista (KB950582)
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 800719E4

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista (KB950759)
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 800719E4

Both report "success" then require a reboot. After reboot, WU reports
that the important updates failed.

I have tried downloading the .msu files for the specific updates. Both
do the same thing -- they install, require a reboot, and then WU
reports that the updates are still required.

I was going to just bite the bullet and do a repair upgrade install
from my DVD, but I found that since I have SP1 I can not do this
(Vista setup says I need to upgrade from an older version) -- even
from a slipstreamed DVD. A fresh install is not something I can do
right now -- just way too much to reconfigure in that case. So I need
to solve this update issue.

Below is the windowsupdate.log from the most recent WU attempt at
installing these updates. Any ideas? Googling the error code
800719E4 seems to turn up nothing but people begging for help with the
same problem!

TIA,

-Brandon

cbs.log 24,419,811 bytes
windowsupdate.log 2,026,263 bytes

I tried renaming the cbs.log file to cbs.log.old to see if an empty
file would slove the problem. It didn't -- same error in Windows
Update.

Are there other log files that I can check? The windowsupdate.log
file seems to be working fine -- it gets bigger every time I try
running updates.

I've already opened a ticket there. So far I've only got a canned
response, but we'll see. I'm hoping someone here can help me faster.

Hi Brandon, I have exactly the same issue with this two updates with exactly
the same error message. I've been communicating with Microsoft regarding this
for already two months, we tried a lot of things and nothing helped. The only
two things that they recommended and I did not do are this two:
uninstallation of SP1 and In-Place upgrade. I don't have time for it yet. If
you want you can try it, see instructions below, and see if it hepls. Let us
know if something works for you.

Regarding the Log file mentioned by MowGreen, it's interesting that I see
this error message in System log using Windows Event Viewer:

The Windows Modules Installer service terminated with the following error:
Log space is exhausted.

It happens after the reboot after any attempt to install any one of those
Updates. If I only knew which log it means.

-----------------------------------------------

Suggestion 3: Uninstall Windows Vista SP1

1. Click Start and Control Panel.
2. Click Uninstall a program in Control Panel Home mode.
3. Click View installed updates.
4. Highlight Windows Vista SP1 and click Uninstall.

Suggestion 4: In-Place upgrade

Please backup all the important files on the system drive to other drives to
avoid data loss. In order to avoid any error message, please refer to the
following link to disable some features first.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946078

Note: Some programs may not work after the upgrading. Please understand it
is normal and we can reinstall them to have them function.

Run the Setup program after you start the computer by using the current
Operating System.

1. Start the computer by using the current Operating System.
2. Insert the Windows Vista DVD in the computer's DVD drive.
3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate:

• If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears.
Click Install now.
• If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps:
a. Click Start, type Drive:\setup.exe into Start Search box, and then press
Enter.
Note Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive.
b. Click Install now.

4. When you reach the Which type of installation to you want screen, click
Upgrade to upgrade the current operating system to Windows Vista.

Unfortunately I can't do this -- I already tried. My Vista
installation was an upgrade from XP Pro, but I installed from an SP1
slipstreamed Vista DVD. So the service pack item does not allow for
an uninstall, and the DVD won't do an in-place upgrade (says it has to
be an older version).

If there is a way to force the in-place upgrade, I'd try it.

I'm afraid I am going to have to wipe & install fresh. I hate even
the thought of it -- my machine is well-oiled except for this WU issue
and works fine otherwise, with tons of stuff that I have "just so" and
use daily in my business. It would take weeks to get it back to where
it is. The funny thing is that if I had a catastrophic drive failure
I could be back in business in a few hours thanks to True Image, but
fixing a nagging upgrade error will take days!

I don't use IE much at all, so I am not concerned about the IE update.
I am concerned that an "important" Windows security update isn't
installing, though.

You're mowst welcome, Brandon. Neither of the logs are unusally large.

What is the installed antivirus/security software ?

Perhaps the issue is being caused by security software and it's a
transaction log or a corrupted WU database that is the issue. Thus the
system thinks that the log is full.

Suggest you give the AU| WindowsUpdate Reset Tool a shot:
http://www.codeplex.com/aureset/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=13656

That will remove all logs related to updating and recreate the
SoftwareDistribution folder hierarchy where the logs are stored.
IF there's any issues when running or after running the tool, please let
me know right away. I'll put you in touch with the tool's author.

I feel the same regarding re-installing Vista, it will take days. For now
I think I'll wait and see. I believe the security threat is not too high so
far.
Microsoft people know about this issue and
hopefully one day they'll fix it. Not many people experience this
problem so unfortunately the pressure for them is not too high.

The Microsoft guy I talked to mentioned that the root of the problem
can be in a hardware component of my computer, which is old. Judging
by the fact that your computer was upgraded from XP it’s not new either.
Do you mind if we compare hardware configurations? It may help us
to figure out the faulty driver or something. Just let me know if you have
the same hardware components.

My computer:
Motherboard: ASUS A8N-SLI Premium
CPU: Athlon 64 3200

CD/DVDs: LG 4163B IDE, plus virtual CD CloneDrive

I used msconfig to disable all startup programs and disable all non-MS
services on startup. I then ran aureset, rebooted, and tried WU
again. I tried just one update at a time, and it is still failing with
the same error message.

I was able to install today's Windows Defender definition update,
though. It's just these two security updates that won't install.

It reported success. However, it did give this error line while it
was running:

--Resetting NTFS Transactional Log---
Error: The specified directory does not contain a resource manager.

The rest seemed to work properly, but it still didn't help WU get
those security updates installed. :-/

I have sent my windowsupdate.log to Microsoft but I still haven't
heard anything from them but a canned response.

Hmmm ... there's no antivirus software installed ? That's very risky
considering the state of the net nowadays.

Let's try this:

A) Run chkdsk to see if there is an issue with the HD
if not
B)
1. Open an Administrator command prompt by right clicking on Start ->
All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt and selecting "Run as
Administrator" and clicking "Allow" for the elevation prompt
2. In the command prompt, type the command below
fsutil resource setautoreset C:
(This assumes that C: is the drive in which Vista is installed. If it is
installed on another drive like D:, please change the drive letter
appropriately)
3. Reboot the machine

Try to install the updates once more.

It required true or false, so I did:

fsutil resource setautoreset true C:

Is that correct?

Anyway, I did that, rebooted, ran WU again, and there is no change.
The updates still fail with the same error code.

Thanks,

Yup, true was needed. Did you run chkdsk prior to using the command ?

And, I repeat, there is NO antivirus installed ?

Perhaps the system has 'unwanted visitors' if there's no AV installed.
And, those 'unwanted visitors' would like nothing better than to deny
updates to the OS.

Yes. No problems.

I installed AVG, ran a full system scan, and enabled the resident
scanner. There are is no virus, spyware, or other malware on the
machine. Still no change in WU -- the updates are still failing with
the same error code.

I tried everything I saw here and nothing work for me either, but one of the
posts mentioned a loss of connectivity. I had been trying to apply the
updates while connected via WI-FI. When I switched to a wired ethernet
connected and re-installed the updates they completed successfully!

Might work for you too.

Good luck!

Hi Todd,

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm actually on ethernet all the time plus the
updates are already on my hard drive. So it's not your case. But it's very
interesting, you are the first person reporting a successful installation of
the update. You are talking about Windows Vista, right?

SLS

Thanks for the suggestion. However, I am on wired LAN, and get the
error even when I manually download the update files first.

As I said, I have an ongoing case with them for this issue. The
problem is that they are slow to respond and still haven't suggested
doing anything I haven't already tried. But I am being patient with
them and following all of their steps. In fact, they have now *three
times* "suggested" I try a manual installation of the updates, and I
will, again, reply and tell them it is still not working.

As the other guy said, he went around with them for 2 months with no
resolution for this error. I'm not hopeful that they'll solve it for
me, but I'm being patient and we'll see.

Is this via the phone or email, Brandon ?

BTW, there's another IE Cumulative Security update that was issued today
that supercedes the previous one:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=13cba012-dd20-48f9-8e44-e4cb104c4cad&DisplayLang=en

Download and save Windows6.0-KB953838-x86.msu
Then *right* click the downloaded file and choose 'Run as administrator'.
Follow the prompts.

Did that get it installed ?

No. And WU reports the same error code.

I had over a dozen updates show up on WU today. I was able to get all
of them installed except for this new IE update and the previous
security update mentioned before.

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 in Windows Vista (KB953838)
Installation date: ‎8/‎12/‎2008 5:25 PM

Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 800719E4

Security Update for Windows Vista (KB950582)

Installation date: ‎8/‎12/‎2008 5:25 PM

Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 800719E4

I also used msconfig to do a minimal startup (only MS services, no
startup programs), ran the WU reset utility you suggested before, and
then tried WU again. Still the same problems.

Since both updates are for Explorer, IE and Windows, than perhaps an
add-on is causing the installation failures. Open the Internet Options
applet in Control Panel, click the Programs tab and then the Manage
Add-ons button to access them. [ these steps are for XP; Vista may differ ]
Disable all non-Microsoft add-ons and see if that resolves the
installation issue.

If I'm following the thread correctly, the error code is "log full". Perhaps
this is the Internet Explorer event log? (I assume there's an IE event log in
the Windows Vista version as there is in the Windows XP one?)

In this context, "Full" might mean "corrupt". What does the system event log
viewer show?

Harry.

Hmm interesting because I bought this machine with Vista installed and am
getting same issues. SO if it is hardware, am thinking it is a pure
incompatability and not an old hdw issue. I also have a AMD dual core.. I
wonder if it is an incompatability there

Brandon above indicated that he has Intel CPU, and our hardware
configurations are very different. So it's hard to tell if this is some sort
of incompatibility and where exactly if yes.

BTW I checked the KB article about this KB950582 fix and found out that
there are workarounds so you can use them and live without the update.
