For more then a week the installation on an essential security
.NET-FrameWork-update for version 1.1 fails; error 0x643.

Looking over Microsoft website I tried two things:
- rename the Software-Distribution folder so that Windows created a new one;
- I removed all installed .NET-FW versions (1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5) by
Control Panel/Software and then the remnants by WindowsInstallCleanup
application.
Then I had to run Windows Update and it wanted to install .NET-FW 3.5 SP1
with .NET-FW 3.5 Family-Update x86.
Installation failed again; Error 0x80070645.

So, what to do now? Could there be a missing file?
I cleaned up my pc and ran ccleaner two weeks ago.

1. Before doing anything else, write down the .NET Framework versions which
are already installed:

How to determine which versions of the .NET Framework are installed and
whether service packs have been applied
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318785

2. Now see Resolution Method 2 in...

When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0,
or 3.5, you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows
Installer error code "1603" (ignore the title, if need be)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100

After running the appropriate/needed tool, (re)install all .NET Framework
versions manually using the download links on the page then run Windows
Update manually to install security updates for same.

NB: If you've removed .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, reinstalling it will also
install .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2.

IMPORTANT! => If you've removed .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, reinstall your .NET
Framework versions in the following order:

1. .Net Framework 3.5 SP1, then...
2. .Net Framework 1.1, then...
3. .Net Framework 1.1 SP1

NB: KB923100 references this page:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/30/611355.aspx. Please read
ALL of it as well as the related page
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx before using the .NET
Framework Cleanup Tool.

Thanx, PA Bear for your answer.
I again removed all .NET FW's then started to manually install them.
Starting with the last 3.5, then the 1.1. .....

now there are some problems.

Not all that was installed on my pc, is on the page
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100 like version 2.0 SP2 (only SP1), the
same with version 3.0 SP2.

Other problem is that version 2.0 refuses to install. "Setup cannot continue
because this version of the .NET Framework is incompatible with a previously
installed one." Went to link on the error-dialog
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q312/5/00.asp it told me
to remove version 2.0 SP1 NL laguage pack, that indeed was installed (did it
came with 3.5?). I removed it, tried again, but again the same error
occurred.

Also version 3.0 SP1 LangPack NLD is installed (previously I had 3.0 SP2 on
my pc!)

And version 3.5 is installed, but not the servicepack 1.

It is rather confusing me with the frameworks. What would be the best
workaround? Maybe I should install windows again?

Wndows XP Pro SP3 is on my pc. I turned Windows update off in order to keep
hold on the proper installation order; but that is hard.

Allow me to quote myself:

>> NB: If you've removed .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, reinstalling it will also
>> install .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2.

If you've already installed .NET Framework 3.5, you don't need to install
any flavor of 2.0 or 3.0.

If you've also got .NET Framework v1.1 installed, you're good to go.

Open IE to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | select CUSTOM & scan |
install any critical security updates and/or .NET Framework Service Packs
offered; follow all prompts.

After rebooting, check-in at Windows Update again to make sure no additional
critical security updates are offered now.

TIP: If IE8 or IE7 isn't already installed, do NOT install it via Windows
Update! "Hide" it instead. More, later, on this if you need it.

OK, thanx. I unstalled all FW's and will install them anew.

Please, tell me what you mean by:

> Update! "Hide" it instead. More, later, on this if you need it.

I indeed use IE8.

One more question: There happen to be more 'flavors' of version 3.5:

A note on the downloadpage says: "To download the full redistributable
package, rather than the bootstrapper, click on the link below to start the
download:
.NET Framework 3.5 full package"

Underneath there is a log what others downloaded; also version 3.5 SP1. Is
this the one I should install, or should I first install the 'bootstrapper
(what is that?)' or can I do with the full version?

You want NET Framework 3.5 full package. Windows Update will offer SP1
later.

Ignore my reference to IE8 then.

Hi PA Bear and Ǝиçεl,
I did the whole workaround and ended up with two failures after three rounds
of WinUpdate plus reboots:

- KB974417 - Sec.upd for .NFW 2.0 SP2 Error 0x645
- KB951847 - (...) >NFW 3.5 Family-Update x86 Error 0x80070645

The latter I reported before.

I read the reply of Ǝиçεl again and downloaded:
- Netfx20SP2
- NDP20SP2-KB958481-x86
also:
- NDP30SP2-KB958483-x86
- NDP35SP1-KB958484-x86
and:
- Aaron's .NFW-verification-tool.

Indeed .NFW 2.0 SP2 nor .NFW 3.0 SP2 are installed

I am a bit in insecure now about what to start by now. Is it OK to install
all downloaded files mentioned above, in shown order?

Reinstall your .NET Framework versions in the following order:

1. .Net Framework 3.5, then...

2. .Net Framework 1.1, then...
3. .Net Framework 1.1 SP1

Then Check-in at Windows Update and install any critical security updates
offered.

PS: WIndows Update /should/ also offer .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and you may
need to install it first, reboot, and return to Windows Update for the
security updates, all of which should install w/out a problem now.

I'm sorry, it seems that I am stuck. I did the whole workaround as you
recommended, but still:

- KB974417 - Securityupd for .NFW 2.0 SP2 (Error 0x645) and
- KB951847 - (...) .NFW 3.5 Family-Update x86 (Error 0x80070645)
keep refusing to install via WinUpd!

I tried to install .NFW 2.0 SP2 (file Netfx20SP2.exe), but it failed too.
NOTE that this file wasn't offered by WinUpd (I manually downloaded it via
link that Ǝиçεl gave me).

By now, I got installed (via ControlPanel>Add/Remove):

- .NFW 1.1
- .NFW 2.0 SP1 LangPack NLD
- .NFW 3.0 SP1 LangPack NLD
- .NFW 3.5 SP1

THE STRANGE THING IS, when I ran the setupverifyer it showed .NFW 2.0 SP2
and .NFW 3.0 SP2.
By the way, all .NFW-installations were OK, according to the setupverifyer.

But, is there still a way out of this?
