windows update problem

i recently had to restore my system. i am trying to update windows from ie
6.0, but when i get to the window where update tries to figure out what
version of windows i have, hothing happens. is there something i am missing?

Navigate to the WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS directory
[folder]. Copy and paste the last 50 lines or so of the log into your
reply, please.

I had the same problem. It says it's trying to locate the updates I already
have installed and make the list of new critical updates, but it just sits
there for hours with the progress bar not displaying anything! Win2k, service
pack 4, 56k dialup, IE6.

This problem began about a month ago. I don't like automatic updates, they
take too long on stufff I don't want or need.
