Two possibilities : A Third party program is affecting the WU Service
(anti-spwyare programs, Internet/web accelerators, Firewall/Anti-Virus
programs) or the downloaded file is corrupt.

Also see:

You receive error code 8000FFFF when you click "Check for Updates" in the
Windows Update Control Panel item on a Windows Vista-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946414

Suggest you rename the SoftwareDistribution folder to whatever you like.
This will take care of any corrupted downloaded files.

How to rename the SoftwareDistribution folder in Vista -
1. Stop the Windows Update service (make sure you are logged on as an
Administrator)

Start button || Control Panel ||System and Maintenance ||Administrative
Tools
Double-click Services
(Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so.)
Right-click the Windows Update service and click Stop.

2. Click Start, type %windir% in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

Locate and rename the SoftwareDistribution folder.

3. Start the Windows Update service

Start button || Control Panel ||System and Maintenance ||Administrative
Tools
Double-click Services
(Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so.)
Right-click the Windows Update service and click Start.

This procedure will erase your history on the Windows Update Site. Not
important.

Dear TuarArian,
I too have had the "windows can't check for updates" problem.
I also have a fairly new computer that had vista installed from the factory.
I tried your suggestion and was able to do every step easily, however the
only thing it did was change where it says "most recent check for updates:
now it says never" and "updates were installed: now it says never" (instead
of the date that was there previously). So now do I have to put that folder
name back to the way it was, or what? Do you have any other suggestions to
solve this problem? I am running TrendMicro security if that makes any
difference and have uninstalled it and tried updating with no luck. I have
searched and searched and tried many things but nothing seems to work. I
haven't had an update since the beginning of January.

Please help me if you can.... thanks in advance.....
P.S. my error code is 80244019

Hello,
Did you ever resolve your Windows can't check for updates problem?
I sure could use some help too. I tried TaurArian's suggestion but it
didn't work for me. I am using TrendMicro security and I was curious if you
were too.
Maybe it has something to do with that, who knows. Thanks for your
assistance.

Your error code is different from the OP.
Your error is 80244019

Renaming the softwaredistribution folder erases the history. You can easily
check in Vista what updates have been install successfully and the history is
not important.

I did point out "> > This procedure will erase your history on the Windows
Update Site. Not > > important..

If you want it all back, rename the renamed softwaredistribution folder to
its original name.

As for your error code, please start your own thread and clearly state what
your problem is, your OS including SP level and what error codes you have and
what you have tried so far.

Thank you.

Has anyone discovered a solution to this problem. I also have Vista and
within the last week my pc started saying "Windows can't check for updates".
I have tried every solution I could find by searching the internet to no
avail. I am almost ready to give up and wipe my hard drive and install
linux.

I also have the same problem - vista, can't check for updates, etc. and i was
thinking of wiping my hard drive too.. but because i haven't used that
computer for over a year, i wasn't sure if that had anything to do with the
problem.. now it seems to be a problem with vista, since you only started to
have this problem last week.. so i think i'll wait for a solution to come up
???
ps. my other vista computer that i use daily doesn't seem to have this
update problem though..

Thanks! The renaming of the SoftwareDistribution step worked for me. Not
worried about the history as long as I get the updates.

Try writing the code with one less zero and prefix it with 0x: 0x80070005
( or not: 80070005).

You at least have the correct number of digits in your code.
Now try searching for 0x8024402C instead.

Good luck

Hi TaurArian, I appreciate your help, I’ve an error code 80070643 when I try
to download the updater for windows update, which is asking every single
time, I have vista ultimate extra (unfortunately), I’ve managed to download
the updater file by manualy saving it on the desktop, and it shows as a
successful update, but it still asking for it, apparently is not seen it, I
presume … I’ve tried your suggestion, just in case but no cigar! I’ve
searched the web up and down tried many things except running over it with my
truck , which it might happen soon!
Have any ideas? Can you help me? Thanks.

Perhaps now you will try some diagnosis? ; )

<cmd_output OS="W7">
C:\>set /a c = 0x643
1603
C:\>net helpmsg %c%

Fatal error during installation.

</cmd_output>

The implication of that meaning of your error code would be that there must
be some more specific symptom to uncover, usually by reading the install log
and looking for either representation of the error code; then going
backwards from there.

Hi TaurArian

I had problems with Windows Update also, giving me the "Windows can´t check
for updates" message each time, the progress bar kept going and going and
never stopped searching for updates...

I red your note here and tryed it, thinking that maybe would help, but it is
worst now.. I receive a message saying that Windows could not search for new
updates, and this:
Error found: Code 80070490 Windows Update encountered an unknown
error.

I tryed to set the file´s name back to how it was, but apparently it doesn´t
work this way...

Please, if you know what could I do in this case I will appreciate your
help! I´m worried about it :s :s

P.D: I checked other threads about this error and they suggest re-installing
the Operative System with the DVD or CD???? Mine came with my laptop (HP
Pavilion tx 1305us) without any CD or DVD!!!

Thanks in advance

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2;
Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64-bit) when posting in a forum or
newsgroup. Please do so in your next reply.

Has another Norton application or a McAfee application ever been installed
on the computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you
bought it)?
