I have an old (2003) laptop that I trying to put back in service. I need to
download sp 2 but can't figure out how to do it. Windows update only seems
to offer sp3 but I can't download it until I have sp2. Any ideas?

Now is a great time to point you to one of the easiest ways to find
information on problems you may be having and solutions others have found:

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

You do not need SP2 to install SP3. You do need *at least* SP1 installed.
So if you have SP1 installed - just install SP3 and then all post-SP3
patches.

Windows XP SP1a for IT Professionals (it works for anyone really)

Windows XP SP2 for IT Professionals (it works for anyone really)

Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for
IT Professionals and Developers (works just as well for you.)
